craftyhunnypie
Oh what a night exactly! We have been looking for escapee chickens! As you know we have recently had a new chicken shed & recently stocked it with new chooks. Last week, we got 2 chickens from Wernlas ( Cassandra & Marlene ) which have been great & this morning they were joined by 2 more from a local supplier. We got a cuckoo maran & a welsummer, both 11 weeks old called Frenchie & Fanny. Got them home, shut them in house for half an hour, then let them into the enclosure with the others. Bit of pecking, but nothing to worry about & eventually they were all doing the chicken dance & searching for tasty morsels! Tonight, we came to shut them in. The 2 Wernlas girls were roosting on the balcony rail inside the house, but the new 2 were missing. Nowhere in sight. What a panic! Search and found Frenchie the welsummer near the garage, but couldn't find Fanny the maran anywhere. Our chicken sitter & her dad came round searching too & my sister & brother in law also turned up. So there we were 6 of us searching in the trees & bushes in our garden, in the neighbours garden, in the garage...everywhere. No sign. We were fearing that we'd lost her til morning & my brother in law saw her at the bottom of our garden roosted on a log. Scooped her up & clipped her wing & did her welsummer friends too. They were popped into the chicken house & shut up for the night. Hmmm. We think they had used the open shed door as a step to get over the fence. What a fright! We will be in the local paper next for runaway chickens! Emma.x

Ain't Nobody Here
What a relief . Losing a chicken on her first night wouldn't have been good .
craftyhunnypie
I shall be helping hubby tomorrow to make the fence a lot lot higher. The poor little loves must have been quite frightened by their adventure. Either that or triumphant at their acheivement. I was besides myself, thinking the poor little mite, out all alone, open to the elements & any predator. I'm a bit worried now though, even though they are hubby's chickens - as we are going away for 10 days on Thursday. Emma.x

..lay a little egg for me
Hi Emma Glad you got them back. Just thought I'd pass on that our neighbour who also has Welsumers found they were escape artists and one turned up camping in a garden about a mile away! I seem to remember reading somewhere that Welsumers are known to be 'flighty'...looks like it might be true. Hopefully the clipped wings will have stopped those antics!
