Kairen
We have just come back from holiday to find our Pretty-Pumkin now is just standing all day in the run. She does not appear to be eating. Also we have noticed her cromb and wattle is now very pale Any ideas of what could be wrong please? Kairen
Egluntyne
Have you wormed here recently? It might be worth doing......especially if she free ranges. If you use Flubenvet, there is no egg withdrawal period. Also....have you checked her carefully for lice and mites? Any white clusters at the base of the feathers around the vent will indicate that she has lice, and she will need treating. You could use Johnson's Anti Mite Spray or Barrier Louse powder. Hen Watch
Egluntine has given some good advice. Maybe you could also try to give her some watery food by mixing luke warm water with the pellets so it is easier to eat and digest.
Kairen
Where do we get flubenvet worming meds from please? My husband has been hand feeding Pretty-Pumpkin and she has been taking small amounts and small amounts of water. She is all puffed up but her comb is very pale and her tail points downwards. Our house sitters said when we were away she laid a very very smelly shelless egg. We will look again for lice and worm her We tried our vets but they don't she chickens Thanks for all your help and support kairen
Egluntyne
Where do we get flubenvet worming meds from please? You can get it from **here** Our house sitters said when we were away she laid a very very smelly shelless egg. Shell-less eggs often make them very poorly. The fact that it was smelly is unusual and a bit worrying. She could have some sort of infection. If she were mine I wold try to find a vet with some avian experience and have her seen. Edited May 28, 2008 by Guest
Kairen
She is looking a little better today. Husband been spending hours with her coaxing her with grapes/lettuce/worms and fresh water and it seems to be working. She has even been following him around the garden a small amount! Tail sometimes up and still down at times Have ordered the worming meds for them Again thanks for all the advise I feel we may be winning here with her Kairen
Kairen
Just to update everyone who has been so kind to me Yesterday hubbie spent an hour with her and I did as well later. She is now moving round the garden doing 'chickeny'things! Not fully recovered but much much better. Her tail is 80% up and only 20% down and her comb is looking redder by the the day Today we are going to give her a bath as her vent looks very dirty as she has not had a mud bath for about 1 1/2 weeks Waiting for the worming tablets to come so we can worm them Cinnamon-Amber still has an enormous crop but we have done all that is suggested and she has been like that for about 4 weeks now and still laying everyday, feeding well and looks healthy in herself kairen

AND her tail it up all the time and I think we have won, she is acting just like our other two but not laying any eggs yet. But we do not mind as long as she is ok Again many thanks for so much support........where would we be without this site and forum? kairen
Kairen
Oh we are very sad as today when we opened the coup Pretty-Pumpkin just sat all day in her coup and my husband when he came home has had her out and trying to coax her to drink and eat but sadly she died in his arms. We are so sad and don't know what was wrong with her as she had so dramitically picked up and seemed to be getting so much better Just burying her now...... Pretty-Pumpkin RIP 28/05/2008

madamecholet
So very sorry to read that Pumpkin has gone to the big eglu in the sky. Our Doris has also been laying "softies" and looking very unwell. I got lots of advice from this forum (limestone flour etc) and Doris is now looking much better. I just hope that she doesn't have a relapse like your Pumpkin. It's never nice when a beloved pet is ill, but I never thought I'd feel quite so upset at a chicken getting poorly, but I DID. It's just like having two more children to care for ! chanters
It's never nice when a beloved pet is ill, but I never thought I'd feel quite so upset at a chicken getting poorly, but I DID. It's just like having two more children to care for ! I felt exactly the same, they have such huge personalities you can't help but get attached. Kairen, so very sorry to hear your sad news. At least you know you did all you could to save your girl.
Kairen
Again thank you all for your concern. I was beside myself yesterday and thought I must have gone a bit silly over the loss of a chicken. I knew I would if and when it happened. But my husband has correctly said we have another 2 to look after so have to carry on for them.............
