Egg Lou
Sorry just need to rant I can't belive it! I have been so worried about how my closest neighbours are going to take it when my chickens arrive, been fretting about noise like crazy This morning they have had 2 enormous dog kennels delivered and put in their front garden ( enclosed by hedges )which just so happens to be extremely close to my bedroom window.. I can only presume I can expect 2 substantial sizes dogs to be arriving soon and as it looks like they are staying outside there will be barking all hours! great ! I'm not anti dogs by the way..love them in fact as always had dogs myself... just not when kept outdoors in close proximity to my window! And I was worried about a bit of laying noise! Egluntyne
They can hardly complain about your hens. Are you sure the kennels are not wooden hen houses?
Katie
We had the problem with our next door neighbours keeping a large dog in a small run permenantly, that was literally right next to our kitchen window, so any barking and howling (which was constant) would echo all the way through the house. It depends if you get on with your neighbours I guess, but as we didn't it was very hard to confront them about it. And the moment they had heard about a complaint they were very quick to throw some sly and nasty comments at us. I would suggest getting onto the environmental health officer like we did and keep a diary of noise, we even took tape recordings of the noise from inside the house for evidence as legal action can be taken against the owners. It can be a lengthly process though. We were a few months into the diary keeping etc when the noise stopped all together.. we then found out that the dog had died, which was a bit sudden for such a young dog, but to be honest it didn't suprise us in the slightest it was probably best for the dog, and they haven't replaced it since. Let's just hope your neighbours are getting quiet dogs!
Stevie
You'll probably discover that the larger the dog-the less noise they create! I have a large Bullmastiff who is honestly quiet as a mouse! I've always had large breeds (Rottweilers,Mastiffs) and they're 'self aware'-they know how big they are so dont feel the need to shout about it. Egg Lou
They can hardly complain about your hens. Are you sure the kennels are not wooden hen houses? Now there's wishful thinking! if only! Thanks all.. sometimes you just need to tell someone! Stevie I know you could be right .. I agree that larger ones are mostly quite (seen your photos BTW and yours is lovely!) , just think that any dog kept outside is bound to make a racket.. and who could blame them! Guess i have to wait and see.. maybe I could convince them to have guard chooks instead.. but no cockerel!

Cooks
I agree about larger dogs being quieter, I have a small yorkie and she's very loud when she wants to be, or someone wakes her from her sleep then she sets off my spaniel who woo woo woo's it all over the place.. it's a good job I get on with my neighbours.. they are lovely people actually
Snowy
As long as the big dogs are not Newfoundlands! Our next door but one neighbours had a newfoundland for many years. It was often out all day and would bark constantly - such a deep bark, you could feel it vibrating! But no one complained as it was getting on a bit, and we were secretly all relieved when it popped it's clogs. Only trouble is they got a new one, then bought it a friend to keep it quiet! We had to complain in the end and they were very good. Every now and again it starts up again and if you are in the garden you can hear people shouting 'shut up' from their gardens and he lets the dogs back in the house to shut them up So I don't worry too much about the noise my hens make (or my son's drums for that matter! )

Egg Lou
Thanks for all your reassurance everyone I will just have to wait and see what happens I wouldn't mind a bit of barking during day as gives me more excuse for chook noise and maybe more chickens but its the night I'll worry about.. oh well will see what the next few days bring!! Becka
I have two dog kennels and run for my two large dogs and in the last year they have been in them once! I used to put them in if I went to the supermarket or was going to be out of the house for longer than an hour but to be honest they are just as happy in the house on the odd occasion they are left alone. My neighbour doesn't 'do' dogs and she said they were very quiet and only barked when the postie came. My other neighbour has two spaniels who bark frequently and although it doesn't bother me, I know other people have expressed their displeasure!
