redhotchick
Hi everyone, Is this old news? I noticed my branch of Sainsbury's is selling Cotwold Legbar eggs. Pale blue, with a huge red lion stamped on them I think they look prettier without the big red stamp. £1.95 for 6 though! So to anyone out there selling your eggs, don't be under valuing them! Egluntyne
£1.95 for 6 Good lord!
redhotchick
"ordinary" free range eggs are £1.39 for half a dozen large eggs in my branch of Sainsbury. I do think the price of free range eggs went up earlier this year. I put it down to increased demand and the stores taking advantage of all the publicity from the Jamie/Hugh campaigns. I'm sure I only used to pay £1 not very long ago.
Jules.
I have a couple of customers who I sell eggs to at £1 a box. I thought the price was a bit dear compared to the shops, but worth it as these are special hens eggs , but after chatting to my mum yesterday I was amazed at what price she said eggs sell for in the shops now. I haven't bought eggs for nearly a year now
Abbey Road Girl
Next time I go to Tesco's I'm going to bring pen and paper to note down their prices which they do state per egg. I'm pretty sure that their cheapest (most wretchedly produced) eggs were 20 p each and the most expensive pretty much double that. I try to go there as seldom as possible, so if anyone can beat me to it, it would be much appreciated!

We used to get them in our local Tesco and then they stopped for some reason - of course no one can tell you why but they were gorgeous but I have our own ones now so no need to buy for a while...... McChook
Waitrose are also selling Old Cotswolds Legbar eggs (and Burford Browns) for much the same price - I read in Practical Poultry that they're using 100% recycled packaging (as well they should!) and using this fact as a big selling point - 'the packaging is designed to emphasise the quality and superior taste of these distinctively coloured eggs' Pale blue, with a huge red lion stamped on them I think they look prettier without the big red stamp. I completely agree, much prettier!
Chickens@61
at the farm shop near us, their free range eggs are £1.25 1/2 dozen, but best of all you just get a box and help yourself to which 6 you would like they have blue, green, white, cream, brown and also duck eggs.. the down side is that we all loved the different coloured egg basket so much that we ended up buying a crested hybrid from merrydale and we are now praying for some blue eggs of our own now, if only OH could be persuaded into getting some ducks
Phosphorus
We found the same at our local farm shop - £1.20 for a dozen large eggs. Only normal browns I think though. DH had to buy the duck eggs they had - I did ask him on the way home if this meant we should be getting ducks as well. He wasn't too impressed
Tigerlily
Yes, I buy them at the mo (till my babies start laying! )- they are so expensive but taste very nice I've bought the old cotswold legbar and the burford browns. The yolks are a lovely deep yellow as well but I can't wait till my 3 start laying their own! BW x
oggybags
wow your eggs all aound really cheap!! (as in good value!) Pre ladies I bought organic ree range eggs which were always at the £1.90/6 mark - in sainos and asda, though I noticed last week they'd all gone above the £2 mark the local farm feed / animal supplies shop sells free range (dont think organic) 6= £2 medium & £2.50 large (and bear in mind we're rural so no city inflation!!) due to increased costs..... seems the credit crunch has hit the chooks too!! x
superjules
OH won't let me sell mine, he's worried I'll sell too many and there won't be any left for him! DS loves looking at the Burford Brown eggs in Waitrose, I might try to hatch some next time one of mine goes broody!

redhotchick
Oh my goodness Oggybags! The eggs by you are soooooooo expensive! Good job you've got chickens now! Jules - If free range eggs can hatch, which they obviously can, it has quite put me off them. Although it is not unheard of for cockerels to be raised in battery farms too! Yes - they have turned up at BHWT rescues! I don't like the idea of fertilised eggs...does anyone else think this or is it just me...? Not a problem for me whilst my chickens are laying anyway! Phosphorus
Wow Jules I stand corrected. Never heard of that before. Interesting as well that I thought you had to eat an egg that might be fertilised within a certain time - I wonder how that stands with supermarket eggs then (on the shelf a long time )
superjules
I was surprised when I first heard about it too, but I guess mistakes get made when the chicks are sexed and some slip through the net. Obviously this has implications if you are a strict vegetarian, but other than that I think it doesn't really make any difference and "Ooops, word censored!"ody would notice if they ate one. wombatally
I go to a department store in Newcastle called Fenwicks and in their Food Hall you now pick your own eggs from a selection in a huge basket, put them in the box yourseld and pay a blooming big premium!! Honestly - it works as I have seen people queueing for them!!!
