melly264
Help! New ex-batt, with very bald and red bottom area has been pecked and has a small amount of blood. I have failed to find any purple spray and with 3 children in tow am going to struggle to get some this afternoon, my hubby has managed to pick some up whilst out at work so we can spray her this evening. In the mean time however, what to do? I read somewhere before about using 'any cream' to put over the wound. Ie vasaline or something? Thats only if I manage to catch her. We've identified the one doing the pecking, and thought that it had stopped, thing is the one doing the pecking seems a bit daft, last to find the drink, will only eat out of a bowl on the floor, stands back whilst the other 2 are eating etc. Any advice please!!! The Dogmother
If blood has been drawn, then you'll need to segregate her until you've been able to spray her bum. Anti-peck rings work very well.
*mummy_hen*
Hi Melly, I sympathise with you because on the second day one of mine had a wing feather pulled out, causing it to bleed, etc. and i was petrified that they would all gang up on her. I have heard of this also - if they are on at her a lot, i would catch her and cover it with something (may be a little stressful but will be over quickly), if they seem to be ok with her at the moment, i would be inclined to leave her be until you can get the spray onto her. Mine were fine, didn't even bother her and it healed on it's own (although i do have some spray in the cuboard just in case anything happens with any of them). Sorry i can't be more help....just sympathise with your worry!
melly264
I think they are leaving her alone, so I have made the decision to leave them be unless things change, ie any more blood/pecking. At which point I guess I'll have to fish Annie out until hubby gets home. Wait and see...
chelsea
we've had our 1st ever pecking incident this week. As a temporary measure until we could take action we did cover up ella's bum with a piece of gauze/bandage and some surgical tape. (of course we didnt cover up her vent! ) this stopped the naughty pecker seeing the blood on the bum. Ella now has a bright purple bum (just right for my hen party )
Rhapsody
Howdy neighbour! As you are in farnham I thought I'd mention Anna's Country Store in Rushmoor- sells chook and horse stuff and generally has Purple Spray in- also Denes in Liphook and Countrywide in Liphook. Hope that helps, all the best.
melly264
Thanks Rhapsody, hubby is due home soon with some spray, but I think I ought to visit there (Anna's store) as it would be good to see what they do and don't have for future. I'm sure I can find the details on Yell.com. Annies cut has been left alone thus far and is scabbing over nicely. The whole of her bare bottom area is rather red and sore, would you spray the whole area? Or are you just supposed to spray over the cut? melly264
Anti-peck rings work very well. What is an anti-peck ring?
The Dogmother
There's a thread here Melly http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22584 The FAQ section is very good for reference.
JerryB
Hi everyone. 3 chicks arrived 2w ago. This morning lots of blood on the roosting bars - looks as if the younger gingernut ("Kanchi") has lost a toe- nail. Is this from being pecked? What should I do? melly264
Thanks claret, very helpful. If duracell carries on with her wicked ways we will be investing!
Christian
Hi everyone. 3 chicks arrived 2w ago. This morning lots of blood on the roosting bars - looks as if the younger gingernut ("Kanchi") has lost a toe- nail. Is this from being pecked? What should I do? Hello Neighbour! Is she still bleeding? Is the toe nail definitely missing? If she has caught it on something and pulled it off, she should really be brought in and the wound cleaned with antiseptic wipes/salt water or tea tree solution to keep it clean for a while until it heals. Hope she is better soon.
Abbey Road Girl
Just want to add that purple gentian is available from chemists.
Dodge
One of our girls had a red sore bottom when we first got her, and my OH plastered it with sudocrem http://www.sudocrem.com/uk/120.html After a couple of days, it was a lot better Also one of our girls was getting her feathers plucked out on her breast. Again OH covered the affected area in sudacrem and due to the taste, that stopped any further abuse. You can probably realise that my OH swears by the stuff, and we always have a large tub of it in the home. Regards Dodge
JerryB
Kanchi's toe seems to be healing OK - has definately lost the nail (or is it talon?) Thankfully no more bleeding. Thanks for the advise Christian!

ajm200
A chicken keeping friend recently told me that Iodine can be used if you have trouble getting hold of purple spray. It's not quite a good but better than nothing
