The Managing Director
My girls have less freedom that I was allowed at their age,but there are more dangers now, aren't there? y'know - I'm not sure that there are... My kids have nowhere near the freedom that I had - nor do they seem to want it. My oldest (13) has only just started going on the underground on his own (and we still fret a bit!) Phil when we were kids we walked to school over fields and from about 9 I would often walk home alone and never thought anything of it, there is no way I'd even consider letting my daughter walk to school anytime soon though Interestingly though I have a Japanese sister in law who thought nothing of letting her then 11 year old son cycle an hour across Yokohama to school every day, she has always been much more inclined to let her children be independant , she lent her 17 year old son her car to drive 200 miles the week after he past his test which I thought showed a lot of trust, I waiting for him to arrive was a nervous wreck Mind you my nephew was at the international school with another kid who took the bullet train 4 hours each way to school every day
Cinnamon
I agree Phil, especially your point about traffic . The road outside my house is very fast even thought its supposed to be a 30mph zone, opposite a playing field. There is no footpath,& Devon has to walk up the road to get the school bus - she has already had on near miss & had to jump into a ditch to avoid a speeder As I said,we are opposite a playing field,& I do let the girls over there on their own,but they have their mobiles with them. They also go out on bike rides with friends,or play in the woods. They don't ask for any more freedom,& they understand my concerns for them. However, when I was 12 I used to go out on my bike with a friend for a whole day, cycling on main roads.I would NEVER consider letting my children do that now. I think that there are more dangers now. There must be more dangerous people as the population has risen,so it stands to reason that the "bad man" ratio must have risen too. So,do we protect them , try to educate them on the dangers of the outside world & risk being over protective or allow them to do what they want & risk a terrible incident. I know which I choose
