Eggy question from my new girls

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am new to this, so please forgive me, have never posted anything like this.

We got our new girls yesterday and as they came from a show, they have had a bit of of traumatic time in the last couple of days, so we were not expecting much.

But we have had a couple of "broken" eggs in the nesting box, but after a good look around, I cannot find any traces of shell. I noticed Masala went straight for the grit this morning and had yolk on one of her legs by afternoon - she has also been picked at all day by Tikka.

Silly question I know, but would it be possible that she is laying shell-less eggs?

Any advice gratefully received.

Welcome to the forum, family layer :D . Congratulations on your new girls :D .

Yes, a shell-less egg is quite common - it's often known as a softie. You can get them after a trauma or just for no apparent reason. Should be nothing to worry about unless you get loads of them.

You can give your girls limestone flour to help with shell production, if you like. You can get it from Ebay (sold for turtles and the like).

Yep-sounds like she's laying softies which are eggs without shells.Eating grit is her way of boosting calcium inside her which goes into creating tough shells as most contain crushed oyster shells.

I think all chooks lay them at one stage in their lives.

I'm in Coulsdon. I think that there are quite a few, in this road alone!

It was so funny last night, all the neighbours knew the girls were arriving in the evening, so everyone was in the garden in PJ's, including kids. It was like having a little welcome ceremony. It was lovely.

And today, everyone was looking over the fence, until the kids next door decided to come round and look closer - also helped me clipped the wings.

It's so nice to have such a nice reaction at the beginning like this. I hope it lasts...

Where abouts are you Mrs B?
