chachu
Hi guys, unfortunately JB popped her clogs today, she was put down by the vet this morning after being diagnosed with an large brain tumour. Oh well... Anyways, time to move on, and we'd really like to find someone else to keep our remaining chook, Marmy, company. She's a Gingernut Ranger, so are there any breeds that she wouldnt get on with? Also, bearing that in mind, does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of breed to go for? We'd like a chook who's docile, friendly, good with kids, a good layer, and also suitable for free ranging (they only sleep in the Eglu, and are in the garden for the whole day). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Best regards, Gabe
welsh sarah
sorry to hear about jb i think you can mix any variety of chicken, i think the introductions are the most important not the breed i am sure someone knowledgable will be along soon to help you out sarah
Egluntyne
I'd get 2 companions. That will dilute the inevitable skirmishes that will happen initially. Have a look at **this article** for a few tips about managing intros. Gingernuts will get on with most breeds. Eventually.
Snowy
I agree with Egluntine. Any hen you introduce to her will be bullied at first, so introducing two younger ones will ease things somewhat. Also, as she is older, when she finally goes the same way as JB, you still have 2 left and won't have to go through the introductions again. Any of the hybrids will be good with the gingernut. Christian
Definitely introduce 2 newbies and put out a couple of extra food/water stations, so that Marmy can't 'man' both! Good luck!

craftyhunnypie
Hi - get 2 ! Make one a black rock, they are very friendly & good hens to have free ranging. Maybe a bluebell for your other one, I don't have one - but a lot of people on here do & say they are lovely characters! Whatever you do, don't get a leghorn - as they are very very bossy & flighty!
