The temprament of spelckledys

Recommended Posts

My Rosa has not yet come into lay, & is a monkey to try to catch. When I do she is happy to sit on my knee, but then she sits down an awful lot in the run :?

I think getting a hen one day after your Omlet girls should be ok- just keep an eye on them.

Hello,

Our Speckledly, which we purchased as a Fenning Cou Cou, She was purchased alog with 5 other chickens, 3 pepperpots & 2 mendleshams. She is the youngest & at times appears to be bottom of pecking order if one were fully established (when we gave them mealworms the pepperpots became more greedy & chased her) but at other times she's confident, assertive & has no hesitation against the pepperpots, she's almost like a bird of prey the way she tilts her head when you speak to her, the way she looks at you is different too. She's lovely & friendly, great daily layer except she lays speckled with blood eggs!! She is always curious & loves to chase birds if they land on the lawn near to her. She is always part of the brood but is also happy to wander & forage alone if the others walk off & shes not ready. Shes delightful, wouldn't be without her she's a different character in so many ways .

We bought ours from different places but made sure they all arrived on the same day. Once cube was ready, I put them all together in the nesting box & closed the door & left them there to settle & become acquainted for a few hours. Then let them into their new home all together :) it worked a treat, we've had no squabbling, pecking order etc (touching wood)

Well ours is broody and has been since day one :? since March!! She's quite shy but will come running over with the others when called. She is friendly and pretty to look at. She's being a bit of a nightmare at the moment with this broodyness, when one of the others is in the nestbox trying to lay, she sits in there with them!! She also makes egg announcements for the others which are quite loud! She's the most vocal of the three. She's driving us a bit nuts at the moment, but hopefully she will settle down soon and start laying for us!!

Primrose is my biggest hen but is bottom of the pecking order. She is very tame and likes to be stroked and held. She spends a lot of time running away from Fenny and rubs along fine with barry. So my combination of Gingernut, Pepperpot and Speckledy seems fine. She is laying every day at the moment and is a greedy girl with a taste for treats

Mine is top of the pecking order. Poss because she was first to start laying. Not particularly easy to pick up, but a great character. I love her dark brown shiny eggs. The eggs are not as big as the Black Rocks (similar to Pepperpots) or the Goldine (similar to Ginger Nuts) but really lovely and darker yolks even though they all have the same diet.

I would definitely have another speckledy if anything happened to Becky.

Our Speckledy, (called Speckle  ) is lovely but she's not particularly friendly. She's a great big bird and went broody twice last year, when she went broody again this year we sat her on some eggs, she hatched five and she is a BRILLIANT mum. She was a good layer too and I'd get another if anything happened to her.

Just to add, we got five chooks the day our cube arrived, two from Omlet (I think) and three from a local breeder. Then because there seemed to be loads of room we went and got two more a day or so later and we had no trouble at all with pecking orders.

Good luck

My Speckledy Sadie lives with three gingernuts, she is a lovely bird, huge but lays quite small eggs. As others have said on here, she's quite laid-back - not top chook, not bottom chook, and quite happy to do her own thing. She's about 3 and still lays most days.

I think she's beautiful, I would definitely have another.

We got our speckledy (Sadie) five weeks ago with our other new girls, Susie (Skyline) and Clarissa (Amber Star). Although she is the biggest girl she is bottom of the pecking order and very placid - the last to run for treats, tho' she is getting faster. She lays beautiful shiny eggs and is very vocal after laying :) She's also got the fluffiest knickers
