I thought it would be bushy rather than tall and the leaves are not very big either. Sort of leggy - what did I do wrong?

Sounds as if it has "bolted". The warm weather can do that to it.

 

Feed it to the hens....they will love it.

If you cut it really low but leave the roots in, it should make more growth.

 

As Egluntine says, the hens will love the bits you cut off.

Spinach is hard to grow once summer comes the best crops are from early spring sowings. It bolts very quickly, if you water it daily you can get away with it sometimes. I have got a row in at the allotment which I am feeling hopeful about.

Thanks guys - I have been feeding them to the chickens - that is why I decided to grow them because they like it so much.

 

Got some large leaves initially - but then they just went 'beanstalk' like!!

My spinach bolted a couple of weeks ago. Luckily I have some seedlings ready to plant out to replace them. The original plants were 2 years old I just used to take a couple of leaves from each plant when I need them.

Mine was the perpetual sort as well!

Cut it right back and feed all the flowers and little leaves to the chooks. I have been doing this for weeks and planted some fresh as well
