DIY Eglu extension info

Recommended Posts

DH has at last shown me how to load pics onto Photobucket, although I'm not sure I've retained it!!

Here goes - these, hopefully, are the photos of the new DIY Eglu extension made for our three chooks by their doting "daddy".

The girls are sooooo much happier in their extended run, squabbles are quickly over as they can move apart without running into the side/end of the run in less than 3 steps!

Other reasons for taking this route were cost, this was about £36 rather than nearly £50 each for the converter and extension, and DH went over to the wire place & purchased it 2 days after we got the chooks whereas Omlet would have taken much longer to deliver once the order was placed. By which time I would have been beside myself and Snowdrop would probably have been bald!! Am very lucky to have an engineer for a hubby! :D

 wow - that's impressive!

I'm still not quite sure how he did it, because the Omlet converter is tapered so that it straightens the run out, but that looks pretty darn good - and as you say, a lot cheaper.

How marvellous to have an engineer in the family, handy people aren't they!

Hi Olly,

You can't see it very clearly from the photos, but there is a bit of an overlap on the join to cover the tapering. It just makes it a bit more secure than an exact butting together kind of join - does that make sense? It's very late & I should really go & get some beauty sleep rather than bumbling around the forum!

Have got a year 6 disco to oversee tomorrow & no doubt the creatures will have me awake at the crack of dawn again, oh the joys of alternative parenthood!

And yes an engineer is a very useful person to know - he's just finished a "go-cart" of sorts for DS, who is very impressed! Daddy is soooo 8) !!

Thank you all for your kind words, DH is a very modest man, I think he enjoys the little challenges life - the children and chooks! - throw at him!

Not sure the sunshade will last too much longer as we live in a windtunnel, it's an interim mesure until I get a big enough bungy cord to attach a tarpaulin neatly so it doesn't flap & scare the chooks.

Hi Adams Egg,

DH went to Titchfield to buy the weldmesh, having surfed the internet asking for 75mmx25mm (or 3in x 1in in old money!). He thinks a whole roll would be about £250 which is a lot of money, but would give you lots of runs!!! He managed to get an off-cut at about £12 a metre.

He got his from S.W. Marchant, 01329 842100, www.swmarchant.co.uk

although I'm sure they aren't the only supplier in the country!

Hope this helps!
