Rescue Update

A great post Mel. Thank you!

Just the pictures of Kate's three had me choking back the tears. The feeling of shame that people could allow animals to get like that is so overpowering.

So, you didn't go home with a little box tucked under your arm?

Well done for being part of it and doing something proactive!

I'm going to have a look at doing my bit.

I was talking to hubby about this the other night. The trouble is that it is never going to be the right time for us to adopt.

3 or maybe 4 hens is just right for our garden and you can't mix them with the orginals until they are up to speed.

I did feel guilty about this but as quite rightly said, there are other things that can be done so I'll have a look at the site and see what I CAN actually do.

I was SO tempted!!

I knew that if I rang Paul (he had been working in the morning so couldnt come with me) and told him to go out and buy a coop he would have done!

We did want to adopt some this time round, but after Margot died we wanted to be sure our chooks were all fit and healthy before we brought poorly chooks in - so I am going to find out the next time there is a rescue in our area (well Surrey I think is the nearest) and make sure we have a home for them :D

What was so lovely was the adopters were all sorts - from families adopting 3 or 4 (and they all had names ready for them!)

That's really good - after all not everyone can adopt hens, but there is so much more that can be done and the site is fab for suggesting things - such as writing to the Supermarkets that dont use free range, educating those around you, and spreading the word - you go girl :D

Great to read up on the rescue Mel, I will look forward to Buffie and Clare's postings too.

I felt totally lost for words too when I read Kate's post last night, and I also felt like a bit of wimp for swallowing back the tears at the photo's.

But, you are right, there's lots of things that we can do, and we are all helping by having our own hens in the back garden.

I'm bringing you back on topic with some photos of my girls, taken today. They seem to be settling in well and are eating and drinking happily. The others are not so sure about interlopers in the garden and are expressing their annoyance quite vocally I'm afraid

The hen on her own is Tilly, who is our most oven ready hen, the others have a few more feathers and bigger, floppier combs.

This is all of them, I think it's Tilly & Cam looking at the camera, Dolly has found something more interesting on the ground.

I dont think anyone who cries at this situation is a wimp - I have found that I am becoming more appalled at the way that "humanity" treats humans AND animals - but the thing that stops it seeming all so hopeless is the fabulous people out there who actually do something - however big or small - it only needs one small thing to make a difference.

I've gone to town on mentioning the rescue to anyone who stands still long enough to listen :lol: and at home too,

time for trumpet..........

OH has gone from 'we can't have anymore, what would we do with all the eggs',...... to 'alright then how many shall I expect next time there is a rescue'!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hope all the girls settle into their new homes,

:lol::lol::lol:
