hpops
I sadly had a white silkie that turned out to be a cockerel and had to rehome him. I was VERY sad to see him go as he was such a sweetie. I aslo at the time had a broody hen sitting on some eggs - she then got fed up with sitting on them so I stuck three of them in an incubator. I kept candeling them but could only see through two of them as the third was a blue egg and had a thick shell. the two that I could see through proved to be infertile but as I couldn't see through the blue one (and am inexperienced at candeling) I left them in the incubator. Yesterday I was cooking in my kitchen (where the incubator was) and heard a cheap, cheap and I turned round to see this ball of fluff bobbing about in the incubator!!!! http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee130/hpops9999/Photo35.jpg'>http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee130/hpops9999/Photo35.jpg http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee130/hpops9999/Photo35.jpg It's the cutest thing I have ever seen!!! Now here's a conundrum the chick hatched out of a blue egg - the cockerel was white The rest of my clock are - 2 x gold brahmas 1 RIR cross 3 pekins 1 gold 1 silver partridge and a lemon buff 1 gold silkie cross 1 black silkie 1 Lavender Araucana Now as far as I am aware the Araucana is the only blue egg layer amongst that list & I only get one blue egg a day. So that in my mind equates to 1 white silkie male mating with 1 blue egg laying lavender Araucana.......... Could anyone explain to me why I have a black fluffy chick????? craftyhunnypie
Congratulations! It's absolutely beautiful! It has the head of a silkie chick, but like you say Araucanas are the blue egg layers, so Araucana mummy?! Here's hoping it's a girl & you get lots of blue eggs in the future. What a lovely little chick! Emma.x

Snowy
Ahh, that is gorgeous, and can I see the beginnings of a little top knot already? Regarding the colour, I think it is black and white colour genes that create the lavender and blue colours in chickens, so a certain percentage of the offspring will be black, blue, splash or white (although I'm sure someone out there could explain it far better than me! )
foreveryoung
could just be the chick frathers! you'll soon see a resemblence when the proper feathers comes through I have a Araucana I think but with a hair do (thats from the father) Ive not seen what a pure Araucana looks like! I just know that she came out of a beige egg but lays blue eggs (or basil green)
