New to Chickens - Cheshire

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just joined the forum!

I have been thinking of getting chickens (buff orpingtons) for sometime but haven't quite made that final leap to ordering the house and chickens.

I would love to hear from any chicken keepers in Cheshire, especially anyone in the Knutsford/Northwich/Warrington areas.

My only concern - and the one thing that stops me making the 'leap' is not being able to go away for the odd weekend. Our neighbours are nice but we are relataively new to this area so don't feel we know them well enough to ask favours yet.

Any advice/tips would be most welcome - on any subject for a beginner!

Many thanks

Susan

Sorry, but can I just ask; Cheshire, On the English Wales Boreder, that kind of area? If so, where are you getting your chickens from?

It's just I'm under sixteen as you can probably tell from my lack of Geographic knowledge, but I want to keep pet chickens, though I don't know where to buy them! I live in North Wales, and Cheshire (If it's the one I'm thinking of) is not too far away.

Would really appreciate your news.

Thanks

Hi Scramble,

yes, Cheshire borders North Wales. I got some of my hens from Omlet, some from Garden Poultry in Cheshire, and some from the Wernlas Collection in Shropshire (which also borders Wales). I see that you want Pekin bantams, and you would be able to get some from Wernlas. Give them a ring as you will probably have to order the bantams. Good luck!

Hi Susan,

I live in Bolton, maybe abit far about than u. Anyway I just got my 4 girls 3 days ago they love the cube and I find myself looking through the kitchen window for ages at a time just watching them.

Welcome to the forum by the way :D You should defo get some and don't worry about your neighbours we just moved afew months ago and mine love the chickens and pop their heads over the garden fence when Im at work to check that they are ok for me.

The chickens if they have a good run like the cube will be fine left for 2 days or so they put themselves to bed and as long as the water and food is topped up b4 u go away they will be safe within the cube. :)

Welcome to the forum Susan. I'm sure you will not regret the decision to keep hens. :)

Possibly silly question, and I'm sure someone will correct me ( ), but are Buff Orps a suitable "first" chicken?

As for going away for the weekend, they will be fine provided you've left plenty of food and water and don't mind coming back to a nestful of eggs.

hiya and welcome.

I dont know about Buff Orps being 'suitable', my husband wanted some but in fact our breeder put me off them - he said they only lay about 100 eggs a year, so I went for more productive leghorn and maran. however, I read a feature recently (Telegraph) I think were the lady was raving about them, saying what a beautiful placid breed they were. so horses for courses I think!

hi I live near wilmslow and just thought I'd pass on that The Ark vets in Mobberly has been good for our chucks! the vet we saw keeps chickens as pets herself and they also treat lots of 'farm' animals as well as domestic pets x thought it might be not too far from you , should you need a vet.
