it has rained all night and all day here so far - just went out to see the girls, and they are standing around looking very disconsolate. am thinking I might give them some warm weetabix or something to help keep the chill off! (naturally they havent the sense to get under cover... although its fair to say that the rain is going horizontally, so there arent many hiding places, and even the trees they usually like to sit under are dripping on them.)

poor little things, I do feel sorry for them.

That said, mine prefer to be wet and foraging, to dry and bored.

we're in luck up here in scotland ... our rain has stopped - touch wood . last week i kept expecting them to grow webbed feet . ours still love running about in it though they go back in the run or under the trees or gaden furniture if that tropical rain comes on you know the rain thats totally solid ?? they managed through their first thunder storm last week too , no problem at all . we just closed them in with some corn to take their minds off it . i agree that a busy wet hen is a happier hen than a bored dry one ...

At the moment mine are huddled together in the shelter of the oak tree. Every now and then they scurry out for a quick forage and then run back under the tree. The rain brings out the worms and bugs so they are having a lovely time.

 

Their dust bath is now a mud bath and my white chickens are now brown. So they will be sitting in front of the mirror this evening regaining their good looks.

have made them 2 temporary dry areas - roofed the open area of the rabbit coop and the broody cage with bubble wrap, expertly held down with bricks. will they use them? will they hell! they are all wet as anything, and filthy dirty.

I kept mine in their walk in run today to keep them dry. Funnily enough though when I went in to see them they didn't come rushing out when the door was open so perhaps for once they decided that the pen was the better option.

it's ok here today (for the moment) so they are returned to their normal fluffy state... the silkies in particular look so dreadful when they are wet, but Crumpet is all white and fluffy and gorgeous again!

am heading west for work in a little while, so must go and check the weather... anyone down there in Somerset knows what tonight/tomorrow will be like?!

OH looked out of window on Tuesday evening and said "looks like it might rain". "That's OK" said I, "the girls are in the run having a snack". Then the heavens opened and the feather brained bimbos walked out of the run to investigate. Within 10 seconds they were soaked, from the kitchen window it looked like they had no feathers

On Monday we had torrential downpours here so I put in an extra potato to bake and they ate that with sweetcorn, last night it was spaghetti - they wolfed it all down. Felt like I should be tucking them up in their house with a hot water bottle - maybe in the winter!

Mine are hiding under the cube at the moment - very heavy vertical rain and waiting for the thunder and lightning! The other day was similar, and they stayed under the cube until they got bored and went for a stroll. The only thing that made them panic and run for cover was the odd large drip from the oak tree. The blue and splash had very bedraggled feathers, while the buff's feathers seemed to be waterproof and the rain just rolled off her. The following day they all seemed to be larger and fluffier - the rain must be good conditioner! Luckily they have had a good flutter and wander around because up to now it has been quite nice.

we've got a camo tarpaulin hooked on the fence & attached to the run with bungees...it was intended for the winter but it's come in useful this week!!! Keeps the chippings & those 2 nice & dry!!
