Fleata
G ot woken up today to Stella our next doors cat with a sqeaking terrified bird in her mouth. Grabbing my water rifle I squirted, thankfully she dropped the bird and ran off. So now im left with a small frightened baby starling. Ive put him in a box on the kitchen to calm down. I cant see any injuries, but there is blood in his beak. He is standing up now, so im hopefull. I rang the vets straight away, but i cant bring him in. im off with bad knee (dont ask, been hurtining for weeks) so i cant get him there. they have told me to stick him in a box and leave him. But i'm not sure if i should give him water or seed, and what happens after the hour in the box is up??? The chooks went mad and ran to where the little fella had been dropped as i was hobbling down the stairs at the time as fast as i could

Mrs Frugal
That's a brainwave, Fleata. They know the best way to handle the little fella so a good call. I've had them come out to rescue baby hedgehogs in Autumn when they wouldn't survive the winter and they are very good. Well done for saving the little chap. He stands a chance. Louise
Sorry Fleata that often happens they just get a shock and keel over after a few hours I have tried to save many birds and baby rabbits and the same thing has happened every time murderous little beasts But I still ove them You did the best you could so don't feel too bad
Fleata
well i have to say i was impressed to start with, with the RSPCA, but now after nearly an hour, still nothing!!!! Good job it wasnt something bigger, and really suffering. Such a bad response time.
PurpleHen
Oh no! I was getting ready my post of how cute and well done At least you did all you could - and he looks like a happy little chap to me so I'm sure you improved his final moments rather than the cat option
chocchick
poor little thing, I'm sorry. Perhaps the RSPCA were a bit overstretched, it sounds like they couldn't have done anything anyway

Trish
I'm afraid I've had similar experiences with the RSPCA. They say they'll come but they know the baby is likely to die of shock and they leave it because in truth there is little they can do. If it makes it through 24 hours then there is a chance for it. Just wish they wouldn't get people's hopes up by saying they'll come. Somehow that made me feel that the baby was likely to survive, as if they has super powers or something and I felt like it was their fault it died when they didn't come. They don't seem that interested in the more common fauna just the rarer stuff. I suppose they have to stretch themselves thin.
