SarahJo
I found a massive beetle thing in amongst the Lillies today, so got the kids "Bug Hunter" kit out, trappedt and identified it. A Hawthorn Sheild Bug ... shaped like a sheild, green with dull brown markings .. and do bite, and the bite hurts (according to the book). Anyway .... reminded me to check for the Scarlet Lily beetle, which turns lily plants into green shredded messes , and thought it might be a good topic to start .. so we can share good/bad bugs to look out for, and keep/evict in and from our gardens. . Kate delete if this is utter rubbish .
Mrs Frugal
No it's not utter rubbish but I'd delete the Lily beetles if I could !! I've got a clump of Madonna Lilies in the garden and I adore them but they get plastered with Lily beetles this time of year - grrrrrr! My other bugbear (sorry ) is the dreaded Vine Weevils but the girls love eating them and we get lots of excited "ick icks" from Clarry when we find some and feed them to her - yummy ! SarahJo
Where do you find vine weevils .. and what are they like. . See ... this could be a good topic afterall. I once took a plant back to a garden centre .. a twisted hazel, and the bloke said to completely strip and wash the pot ... and there was a maggoty thing in the soil. . Pre-chooks so they could not benefit from the find.
Mrs Frugal
If this works, here's a picture of a Vine Weevil and the grub form..... They live in plant pots and the tell tale signs are nibbled leaves on your plants. It's almost like someone's cut little bits off the edges with scissors. They eat the plant from the roots and you find the top of the plant just lifts off in your fingers - nothing left underneath. They are NASTY bugs - ugh!!! Hope you've all eaten already - . SarahJo
Ughhh ... Kate that made me JUMP . Recognise the grub ... and will take note of his mate . Thanks .....
Sheilaz
Wow, Kate, that made me jump too! Are they that size or bigger. Thought someone had a new bad taste avatar at first. There's an idae for you, Kate. Do you know the song, we're all going on a bug hunt.....we could take all day. Sorry, forgot my singing annoys everyone. Was it bug hunt or bear hunt? Anyway, good topic Sarah, I'll look out for the little buggs.
Mrs Frugal
No , Vine Weevils are about 1.5cm long. My goodness, if they were as big as the photo, I'd be running in the opposite direction!! Sheila, I don't think I'll be changing that to my avatar just yet !

If you haven't got them in your garedn I would avoid that garden centre at all costs as you will introduce them and then you've got them for good! You can stuff to water pots to kill them - but better to avoid infected plants!
