MrsDaisy
one of our ladies has a small hard crop today, she's a greedy girl and normally has quite a large crop. she's still bumbling about but less energetically than normal. they were wormed not long ago about 2months?, is there anything we could do to make her better? has access to pellets, grit, sometimes mixed corn, small amount of sweetcorn in the morning and that's about it. a small amount of grass grows in their run but it's mainly covered in chippings. wondered about sardines or tuna or something with oil. she's had a small bit of a grape then refused more. thank you
Egluntyne
Was the crop as you describe first thing this morning? If yes, then it could be impacted. Have a look **here**. If it empties overnight then there is nothing to worry about.
MrsDaisy
Hi Egluntine it was small and hard yesterday and this morning. she normally has a huge crop, where you can feel food in it (well grain) but now it's more like a golf ball. will have a look for white maggots and do the olive oil thing (is it better to give oil as oil or something "in" oil like the fish? thank you for your advice
Egluntyne
I'd use plain olive oil and masage it every half hour or so today. Try to encourage her to dink in between times. If there is anything like long grass that she is eating, that could cause the problem as it forms a ball and can't pass through ino he next part of the gut. Has she ususally got access to Mixed Poultry Grit too?
MrsDaisy
grit is mixed in with their layer pellets. i don't know if she's been eating grass but they don't free range (too font of being up high!) their run is mainly bark chippings, hemcore for bedding inside. thanks x
alih
mrs daisy I had a chicken with a huge crop and gave her maggots drenched in olive oil for a week and she is a lot better - the maggots seem to do the trick and I gaver her a couple of dozen a day which she loved.. Steph101
I tried this with one of our gingers... a syringe full of olive oil twice a day for a couple of days, massage, and a couple of bowls of maggots. Worked a treat.
