stinging nettles - what to put on a sting?

Recommended Posts

Docken leaves (not sure if spelling right). Have been using them since early childhood and they work a treat - just rub them hard over the sting (preferrably as soon as possible after being stung). They tend to grow along side nettles so should be able to find some nearby where you were stung - vaguely maple leaf shaped, green, with a slight white furryness (especially on the underside). - If anyone comes along and says these are not Docken leaves then I will stand corrected on the name, but will stand my the fact they work as have been using them for so long.

Wash it straight away.

Take an anti histamine tablet (Piriton, Clariton etc)

Read the pack instructions, I'm sure they work for stings and you probably don't want anything to make you drowsy for an interview.

You can put antihistamine cream on too, not sure about round your mouth though. Hydrocortisone cream takes the itch out too, but needs to be used sparingly and again, not around the mouth. Can you get to a pharmacist to get some real medical advice?

Good luck with the interview tomorrow.

Hi Lesley - I did indeed mean Dock leaves but up here in my part of Scotland they are also known as "Docken" leaves (pronounced "doocan") - the photo is of one for sure, but does differ significantly from the description I gave as there is another kind of leave that folks up here also refer to as Docken - they both work the same though thankfully! I am glad the name I used bears some resemblence to the name others know it by as my OH is forever wondering what strange Scottish colloquialisms I come out with and he was brought up only 2 miles away from me! It especially effects things to do with gardening as I learned this from my grampa (grandfather)!!! Oh I love the diversity of language!

i couldn't find docken or dock leaves (i know those as burdock, like dandelion and burdock - maybe it's like bread rolls that are called everything from stotties to batches depending where you live!), so i took a piriton tablet and a bottle of wine.

result! it isn't too swollen, and it certainly doesn't hurt!

thank you everybody! my interview is for a college course rather than a job, but i'm sure if i pout at the interviewer i'll be fine!
