Scramble
Hi, I was just wondering what time of year you all bought your chickens. What I have been researching says either spring or autumn is a good time, as in spring you can get used to them and protect them before winter sets in or autumn, when you can buy chickens born earlier in the year that are at their point of lay. I guess it doesn't really matter but I'm curious all the same!
Egluntyne
I bought first ones in Summer, so voted accordingly. I've bought many others at different times though, since.
Guest
got ours in october last year. Don't think I'd want to introduce or get any new ones in the depths of winter, I'd say any of the other 3 seasons would be fine though.
Ange1
I got mine only 3-4 weeks ago, so I guess that's summer, if you can call it summer
redhotchick
I got mine in the middle of Feb. I voted Spring. Is spring February? I wanted to be able to get used to the girls through the warmer (!) and longer days. The first week I had them the temperature plummeted to minus 8! The Eglu is tested to minus 10. I was a bit worried, but they seemed to be warm and snug.
Egg Lou
Summer for me but would have been spring in wait list was a bit shorter
Chickvic
We had our girls on 2nd of April, so Spring, but they have had a loooong spring haven't they? Doesn't seem to have made it to summer yet
ubereglu
Well, I can't choose a single option! I got the original two, (Muddles and Henrietta) in August, Starlet in October and Molly and Spice in September. Breeders tend to have a larger range for sale during the autumn as these were the ones that had been hatched out during the summer-and are thus larger! Seeing that most people buy in the summer then they usually then have a lot of stock to sell.
Faye&Ant
I got mine in September and wished I had got them earlier because I loved to watch them sunbathe and wished they had long days every day. Before I knew it last year it was winter and they were off to bed at 3.
jomaxsmith
I got mine at the end of October and had to wait a long, long time for eggs as the days were short and they matured later. I think I'd get POL hens when they days are longer if we did it again. Jo
Gallina
Summer's best if you can wait: it means the hens were hatched at the time hens are supposed to hatch (the spring) and you will have lots of time in the garden to get used to them. Spring and autumn are all right, but winter is best avoided.
Scramble
Thank you for your replies! It was just while the schools are on summer holiday which was today, and I'm under 16 I was just thinking about getting my chickens now, although I didn't know if now was the best time and whether to wait until next spring! But I don't think there will be any problem now! Thank you all loads!
Steph101
We got ours in mid Feb, so they just started laying at the beginning of March, with spring just around the corner.
