pbfhpunk
I was inside just drying my hair after a shower while DH was outside with the chickens and I just heard him shout and saw him run off, I thought the Gobble was chasing DJ, but then saw a dog with sometihng in its mouth, someone was walking their dog in the field behind us and the dog slipped the lead, it's an old gun dog and she ran in under the fence went straight for Gobble scooped her up and ran off with her, DH went into the field to let the owner know and the dog brought Gobble up to him, he said it was obvious she was dead but he didn't want to go into too much detail, I went and got dressed and got outside as soon as I could and saw DH in the field and he waved me away, I couldn't see any chickens so was getting very scared, I could hear the owner apologising and she said that the dog is deaf so couldn't hear the owner shouting her back. We're very upset but understand it was no one's fault, the dog was owning doing what's natural, he slipped the lead and DH was out with the chickens. The good thing is that it was quick and she didn't make a sound. She was our favourite and the one that showed her personality first and the one that fancied DH. We're now not sure waht to do, we have 5 chickens and a cube and an eglu. Gobble was the only one we ever saw go after DJ so is it a possibility she can go back with the others now? then we could get 2 or 3 to go in the eglu I'm really not sure what to do. I'm still in shock I think, it was all so quick and quiet and the other's don't seem to have been aware of it they were in a different part of the garden. Thanks for reading my ramble. Egluntyne
How awful. What a run of bad luck you are having.
pbfhpunk
Thank you all for your kind words, I know it'll hit me more tomorrow when I don't see her in the run, it wsa very surreal when it happened. I know Egluntine things don't seem to be going too well, but DJ is doing so much better so I'm hoping it'll start getting better. The dog owner is coming round at the weekend and was totally horrified about it all, in my normal way I'm now feeling sorry for her! Thank you again Helen
TAJ
Dogs have to legally be kept under control and should not be allowed to 'wonder' on to others property - if the owner knew the dog was deaf even more reason she should keep her on a lead under control! Really sorry for you it must have been awful, but I wouldn't feel sorry for the dog owner. Tracy
Grovefarm
I know it doesnt help but I hope he offered to pay for another one!
pbfhpunk
She did offer, I think that's what she's coming round for at the weekend, I'm just not sure what we're going to do, like I said we've got 4 in the cube, one in a box and and eglu. Just need to go through options. H
Olly
how awful for you. I think DJ either needs to go back with the others or have some companions ... why not try her back in the Cube and see how it goes. If it's not working out maybe you can take her out again, and then get some young friends for her. So sorry to hear that - what a shock. I'm glad the dog owner did the decent thing - she probably feels dreadful about it too.
Abbey Road Girl
So very sorry to read about your sad and shocking experience, Helen. What a traumatic loss. I tend to agree with TAJ about the owner, knowing that the dog was deaf, s/he was under an obligation to keep the dog on a lead.
AMO
Oh Helen - what a horrible couple of weeks this has been for you. I am really sorry to hear about Gobble. I hope your girls settle back as 5 in the cube. Perhaps then you could extend your flock - ex-bats perhaps?
hils78
I can't begin to imagine how you're feeling. As you say at least it was quick. It seems that it was a horrible accident the dog slipping its lead. At least the owner of the dog appears to be doing the right thing. Keep us posted. Ange1
Oh Helen, how sad. With a bit of luck DJ will be okay with the others in the cube and presumably that leaves you with an empty eglu? Hmm as you say you have some thinking to do!
