Tall Ships

Recommended Posts

Oh my goodness! I am having to drag myself off the forum as I have "volunteered" to do the early shift at my brothers cafe at the Albert Dock in Liverpool tomorrow and have to get up at ridiculous o'clock. The clippers are in and he is sooooooo busy!

If you are in the area he is the only take away on the dock, just along from the Tate. He has recently changed to free range eggs. I suggested that a load of picketing forum members wouldn't be good for business

my sis is going mental because she lives at the dock and all the visitors are blocking the residents cars in. Apparently the parking is absolute chaos!

Which one is your brother's cafe, we'll try and pop in sometime.

Ooh do you know which ones will be there? DH used to sail the tall ships a lot especially Excelsior. We were arranged to go out on Queen Galadriel a couple of years back but I ended up in hospital so didn't go. It's one of things I look forward to doing when the kids grow up. Oh I love em love em' love 'em

I just found out that the Parade of Sail is on Monday between 2 and 4.

Why have they done that? Surely it would have been better over the weekend?

Perhaps it is to control the crowds. There were a lot of people down there today! I didn't see Excelsior or Queen Galadriel, Mir is listed, here is a link so you can see who is here:

I don't know what the forecast for Monday is but it is really windy at the moment! I work in the Cunard Building at the Pier Head, right on the river, so hopefully I will be able to see them in full sail.

Mir is on the listings so it should be there. We first saw it on the Thames at Tower Bridge, but they can't go there anymore because some twit designed a low bridge and that put a stop to the Tall Ships in London. We actually went on it at Pompey at the Festival of the Sea while it was moored and the modern warships too. The Russian warships are really falling apart, as are their helicopters, but the Mir is top notch and beautiful. There's a couple that we wandered over, naturally we wanted to nose around the Russian ones first. :D

I have never seen the tall ships and we are now planning a day out for tomorrow,

Considering how close we live we have never really been to Liverpool before either, We are really looking forward to it.

Are you working for your brother tomorrow Redhotchick?

I think the bridge was made to ease congestion in the Dartford Tunnel, but not exactly sure. Why they couldn't do something similar to Tower Bridge or another tunnel, I don't know, and since then they did that Millennium Bridge that didn't work first and had to be done again. Which examiner passed those engineers, and which silly council agreed to the plans, eh? At least we can still go to Portsmouth and Bristol, it is just a pity that the history of ships in the heart of London has ended.

I'm so glad someone has helped the Cutty Sark, my favourite of all.

So all who went today and those going tomorrow, have a great time, wish I was there.

I remember when the Tall Ships came to Gothenburg, when we were living there. Dad came to stay as he loves them and I took him across the harbour from where our apartment was on one of the river taxis so he could look around. Just after we arrived, King Carl-Gustav and Crown Princess Victoria arrived in a boat right behind us. They were an arm's length away (they don't have heavy security like our Royal Family) and I told dad that they were there in his honour. For a moment, I think he believed me!!

They were marvellous to see when they sailed out to sea then all sailed back into the harbour - we went out to a castle which is in the harbour itself and they were incredible! Wish I could pop up north to see them this time!

Krysia - Glad you had a fab day, did you take any photos? I love my city and would like all visitors to have a really positive experience. Did you see anything of the rest of Liverpool? The Cathedrals, any of the 7 free museums, or our fabulous new shopping centre Liverpool One? - I can't wait till the second phase is open, which is mostly restaurants - finally a Yo Sushi in Liverpool!

Phonix - The Parade of Sail is on Monday. Are you working then?

Koojie - Apparently, there are notices on many of the bridges in London that marching troops should fall out of step when crossing the relevant bridge. It amplifies the movement that many bridges have - Fascinating!

The Millenium bridge was safe, but when it opened the volume of people crossing contributed to the sway. Once the sway starts people somehow, fall into step, making the problem worse. People were frightened, that in itself could have caused problems, so it was re engineered and modified. I agree it is a shame that tall ships can't enter the heart of London. I'm not knowledgeable on the subject but I wonder if the could take their masts down to enable entry. I think it is possible.

I haven't been up to Wellington Dock. I suppose I could try on my way to work tomorrow. (not very likely though as I will try and get up at the last possible minute). They had a one way system in place for pedestrians, and lots of marshalls. It seemed well organised, and the 7 (!) marshalls I had to get past, against the one way flow to get home, were very reasonable when I told them I had been working. Some of the staff got escorted in past the queues too! Amazing!

I took some photos in the Albert Dock this morning, before the masses arrived, which I will post soon. One of the benefits of starting work early is that you do get to see everything before the crowds arrive.

I wish I'd twigged on earlier in the week that you could tour a few of them, and even one that my nieces could have gone on for a sail I think. I'll have to plan better next time they are in.

I was on my feet today from 5am to 5pm  We just about ran out of milk by then. It was so busy, it's so difficult catering for so many people all at once.

Redhotchick - with the masts down they would be like ships in a bottle! But nowadays it would be a good idea to lower them - heave ho me hearties to get them up again.

Yes I gather troops are not allowed to walk in time on bridges - we watched the Mythbusters on the Discovery channel having a go at that, but can't remember the outcome. Those little rope bridges are great fun - there's a fantastic one in Vancouver that goes over a gorge - OH was really scared especially when I bounced a bit (I was thin in those days too) I do wind him up a lot, the woose!

Glad you had a lovely time there. Maybe they'll be back in our neck of the woods next time.

I love my city too - it's great that at last we have had some recognition for good things rather than bad.

I'm off work today so will be going down to the beach at Hightown to see all the ships - if the rain stays off it will be a great spectacle!!!

Sorry liverpudlians we didn;t really see much else but have decided to go again and do the more touristy stuff,

the main reasons for not trekking any further are that Ash was tired and it was too busy and exciting for him to go to sleep (He is only 21 1/2 months old and usually sleeps from 12-1.45ish he was still awake at 2.30!)

I am currently 6 months pregnant and a lot bigger than I was with him and My body had had enough!

Sooo we came home. BUT as I say we saw a fair bit on the way in and out and saw about 15 lambana's (how many are there?) We will definatly go again when I and the little man have a little more energy!

Phonix - are you sure you're not exagerating a tiny bit?

Susipoos - I bet you had a fabulous view from the beach. I've seen some footage from Crosby and it looks fabulous with the Anthony Gormley Statues in the frame too.

I've never seen the tall ships in real life, but in photos & on tv they are great.

Driving back ( me!) down the M6 today from Penrith we saw signs showing which way to go for the tall ships & the open- hurray for events in the north west :D
