Making a walk in run (more questions added if you can help)

Recommended Posts

would this weld mesh be ok?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/weld-mesh-heavy-duty-16-gauge-1-x-1-30m-roll_W0QQitemZ330252814733QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item330252814733&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318

is 1in x 1in holes ok? Does anyone have this size holes in their mesh and if so how does it look? (do you have a pic to show) and is this guage ok for foxproofness.

Thank you.

edited for more questions.....

If I put the eglu outside the run how do you attatch it to the run? Foxproofness is of high importance with this.

I will be using slabs on the run floor....do I need to put something under them like hard core, sand or are they ok straight on the mud.

does the wood frame of the run sit on the mud or onto the slabs?

Thanks

Thanks all. I have found some 16 gauge from the same place Jules bought her stuff from for £54 so shall go for that. I am full of ideas now, my husband has let loose a beast lol

I have thought of some more questions so shall edit first post with them....

Im not sure as I haven't done it, but could you try cable ties?

It would probably keep better on slabs as it wouldn't rot as quick, but weigh it down so it can be lifted by Mr Fox

Thanks

Thank you all for your help, this is so useful and the pics are great for inspiration.

The girls are in the garden now (I am on the computer by the back door watching them so they are safe and both my boys are out there too) and this is the first time for them out their run and they are stretching their wings and you can just see they are loving the space so I cannot wait to be able to give them more space all day every day.

My husband has told me to order the mesh and he has gone to get the slabs (we are going to put the eglu run on them for now because getting the poo off the grass in the run is no fun at all. He said he is going to price up the wood needed while he is at B&Q too.

MedusA your pic is great, I will show him when he gets back as it shows how you have attached things which he is worried about.

We are thinking that to be more fox proof we might keep the eglu in the run but we will put in on a shelf slightly higher up (so to utilise all the floor space) and put a small eglu sized door behind where it is so we can clean the poo deck and collect eggs easily.

Just a quick tip for when you are building - you have probably thought of this but i'll state the obvious anyway!

Measure the width of the weld mesh and ensure each post is placed in the ground a little short of this so you can cut the weld mesh into lengths and just bang in 'u' shaped nails to hold it in place.

One tip we picked up from another thread was to make sure that the door opens inwards - otherwise all the girls will ruch as soon as you open it

We have our eglu on the outside of the run and on a platform - its much easier for egg collecting and cleaning :) OH cut the eglu shape out of plywood ad it sits inside that (on runners so we can pullit in and out!).
