Valkyrie
This afternoon there was an almighty bokking coming from one of the girls - I thought it sounded like someone had laid an egg - surprising because they aren't old enough yet, but you never know, and as the nest box is still blocked off, I guiltily ran down to check. They seemed a lot happier when I was there - no egg around, so what was worrying them - blackbird shot up from the bushes, nope - Harry the Hedgehog decided to venture out. Not a good sign, he usually comes out just after the girls are in for the night, so he must be ill. But I told him to go back to bed, and he trundled back into his little tunnel behind the hawthorn. Now I'm worrying about him - anyone know if Verm-X is good for the hoggie (disguised in some cat food)? The girls are back to normal - begging when I hang out the washing, the little demons! Oh, and in another thread ages ago someone wondered what we say to call them - ours has developed into "Poop Poop" because of the sound they made when we handed out any treats - that was DD, and it sort of stuck. stoice
Normally I'd worry about the health of a hedgehog if you see it out during the day but a few weekends ago we saw a large fat hog cross our road and start to make his way along the footpath while OH was washing his car. (Maybe hoggie's been watching those green cross code ads! LOL) But it was 2pm and bright sunshine so we boxed him up with some grass and mealworms and released him on the edge of a nearby golf course where he'd be much happier. Three days later we saw another smaller hog wandering down our road too! 4pm, bright sunshine. He made his way under a neighbours hedge in the end though. I think they're all rendez-vous-ing for a big rave or something! Must be normal hedgehog behaviour this time of year.

I think your girls just like to see you come running but glad they are ok.. I don't know about hedgehogs but you can give verm x to horses and other animals etc so would have thought it would be ok.. not sure in what quantities though.. Valkyrie
Hi Ladies It really sounded like the noise they make when laying eggs - they make a different alarm sound when something alarms them usually. Apache did one the other day when I was with them and the other two ran inside the cube run, stood to attention while making funny little sounds - meanwhile Apache carried on as though nothing happened! I krew something was wrong because they were round the back, so not on lookout for treat - reach up on tiptoes and snakey heads waving around! This hedgehog is huge (must be something about this house - now that's my excuse!). But this evening the hedgehog was having his walkabout at the normal time, or was it the same one, it looked a little smaller. I wonder if he is actually a she with babies, and the daytime trip was for a call of nature? I am just going to have to pick it up and look! Ooh just heard the tawny owls - I'm going out for a peek. Goodnight all.
