Couperman
I have lived by the sea all my life and as such have a very healthy respect for it. I also know a lot of the fisherman and others who risk their lives to man the lifeboat voluntarily for the greater good. I have always supported this charity and this is why. http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/2008/07/31/sea-rescue-marske-teen-thanks-lifeboat-84229-21440542/ The Helmsman Cameron mentioned in the article is a neighbour of mine, I will never whinge about his yapping dogs again! He and his crew are unpaid heroes. Well done Lads Kev :
bronze
Totally agree. The RNLI do so much work and so many lives would be lost without them. I think the government takes them for granted.
Egluntyne
Totally agree. It is one of my pet charities. Having seen a documentary about the Penlee Disaster I shall never take their heroism for granted.
Snowy
I agree. We used to live by the sea and have a great regard for what they do.
Looney
Yup, they should receive government funding. I'm sure some of the money that is being mis-spent elsewhere (I won't mention specific examples that I know about ) could be redirected and put to better use. Cate in NZ
Absolutely, couldn't agree more. I also think that idiots who put their own lives at risk by deliberately setting out to see unprepared or in bad weather, thereby putting RNLI crew's lives at risk when they're needed to rescue them should have to pay for the service

I think the chap that pretended to go missing in his canoe should be charged for the search costs too (not sure that was RNLI though (?) so perhaps slightly off topic!) ajm200
If you feel strongly enough, why not start a petition on http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/
Tiggy
I agree I was born in Portsmouth and some of the supid things people do still amazes me, often red flags & warnings are ignored & the life boats have to go out, it should be government funded as one of the emergency services
Couperman
If you feel strongly enough, why not start a petition on http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ I did try but unfortunately the prime minister is on holiday. I Will try again when he and his website returns in September I will contact the Evening Gazette and ask them to pursue it. There is a young lady not far from from us who owes her life to volunteers and she and her family are extremely grateful for their efforts. It seems there is an endless pot of cash to support 'Arty' nonsense. I would prefer that cash to go towards the likes of the RNLI and similar worthy causes, Mountain Rescue for example. I am not suggesting that the Govenrment should run it, but they certainly should support it. I don't know how it works in other countries but I do know those from outside the UK who have been unlucky enough to need the services of the RNLI have been gobsmacked to discover it is a Charity manned by volunteers.
