chickenlickin
Hi I have had loads of slugs in the garden at nght time this year, and when I shut the hens away and take away their feeders, they are 3-4 slugs in side. Does anyone else have this problem?
-xJuliex-
Yup! I cant stand them!
Egluntyne
Sometimes. The hens will eat them if you chuck them in the run.
TheChookKeeper
I discovered this the other day - curiously, they appear to prefer the growers pellets to the layers... very strange! I decided they were too good an opportunity to pass up, so now go out at about midnight before I go to bed and collect them all up in a little pot, and give them to the chooks and ducks the next morning! I find doing it this way a good way of making sure they haven't gobbled a slug pellet or anything too, as if they had, they'd be dead by the next morning! clucking mad
i used to always get about seven snails in the grub each night and the chicks were too wimpish to eat them and so i got into the habit of taking the grub inside each night. recently i have been leaving the grub outside all the time and no snails, so either they havent come back or the chicks are eating them before i get a look in. ruth1
Its like a slug convention in my garden this year, i keep saying to the girls you can eat them you know, they are everywhere and huge
daisymay
I felt like I was in a scene from a horror type film last night. There were slugs heading towards the runs from every edge of the netting. I had no idea there were so many lurking in the bushes! Must've been about 50 or so....probably more
New Girl
My girls LOVE snails and slugs so I've never seen one in their Grub, it wouldn't have a chance of getting in there before being gobbled!! They even eat the snails whole in their shells, you hear the crunch!!!
Angels4
Do I have defective chickens?!?!? I found the biggest, most slimey slug the other day and I picked it up (bare hand mind you) and tossed it to the girls they pecked around it a bit, but really paid it no mind (until Ouiser stepped on it) and jumped into the air, then proceeded to run in circles while screaming. Snowy
Poor Ouiser That's exactly what I'd do if I stepped on a slug!
Egluntyne
Same here! Am impressed that you picked them up with bare hands Angels 4. I can pick up snails (or a slug in a shell as Snowy's little boy described one on Sunday ) with bare hands, but slugs....*shudder*....I have to fling them off a trowel. Try Lesley's tip and snip them in half with a pair of scissors.

chelsea
slug problem here too! have to tip toe dodging the slugs on the path on the way out to the run when i shut the girls in.
Joojoo
I threw a lovely big juicy slug in the run earlier. The girls spotted it, came over for a nose then one of them picked it up and threw it straight back out onto the flower bed where my hostas are!! They really weren't impressed. I can just about manage to pick them up with bare hands if I only get them between my finger tips but I couldn't cut them up :vom:
