Treat bowl etiquette

Recommended Posts

Of an evening my girls like to partake in some mash made with water, grit, limestone flour and corn. I serve this to them in a little dog bowl placed on the lawn. Sometimes i put dried mealworms in the mix and the girls love to search through the mash to find the 'best bits'

I think now I've created a rod for my own back as now as soon as the treat bowl arrives Gladys guards it from the others (Bossy boots) but also steps in it and proceeds to s"Ooops, word censored!"e and kick out all of the mash (I'm guessing looking for the ever elusive dried mealworms)

Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop the mess? It's gross picking up the mashed lumps from the lawn and scooping them back into the bowl 1 min after placing it before them. I'm thinking maybe putting down a mat first - it won't stop the scratching - and I wouldn't want to - but at least i can s"Ooops, word censored!"e back the mash more efficiently. I thought about a tray but I know they'd step on the edge and tip it up. I placed it on a plastic bag last night. So funny. The confusion on their faces - it rustled every time they stepped on it, it spooked them right out. So much so, they then wouldn't touch the treat bowl

Yep, I have dry mash still from when I first got the ex-batts (comfort food) but it's the same stuff as the pellets so when you add cold water both go to mush. I find it a useful way to get calcium into Babs as she's prone to softies. Funny how they love it so much when it's all available 24-7 for them seperately in their run!

You can also mix in spice, garlic, pro biotic yogurt, veg, bokashi bran, chopped grapes or a little cod liver oil, pretty much anything gets hoovered up eventually. In winter I will add some rolled oats with warm water as it'll take longer to digest and keep them warmer.
