Boo&Fudge
Hello Can anyone tell us if it is OK to use an indellible pen to mark the date on the eggs, just so they are used in date order (although at the moment as it is very novel having our own eggs they are not lasting long) We had our first 3 egg day today! Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you
toastedblue
I think most people use a pencil an indelible marker is likely to taint the egg
Seagazer
Congratulations on your first 3 egg day (I'm not jealous really I'm not - I don't mind waiting even longer....) I always use a pencil to put the date on my eggs.

Slats
you can get a pen from a cake decorating shop that is edable ink. ours only cost a couple of quid and does the trick.
surferdog
Pencil here too. I also write the hen's name and weight of the egg on them (I really need to get out more ) Our long suffering neighbour's kids love knowing which chook laid their breakfast. craftyhunnypie
Hi - I've always used a Sharpie pen - have used this since over 2 years & I'm still here to tell the tale - no tainted eggs here! Emma.x
cluckbok
We don't put the date on our eggs, they don't last that long, they are always eaten within the week they were laid. But we do put them in order on the rack that they were laid, in rows.
craftyhunnypie
Those were the days, when I could use eggs up quickly! I now have 7 layers each day. In total 16 hens (3 are pekins & 1 retired hen) & 2 cockerels plus the 3 little chicks (2 of which are pullets, don't know about the Araucana yet). So I could get 17x 7 = 119 eggs a week ..possible 130 (depending on Araucana)..OMG! There is only so much coffee cake hubby can eat!
