Foxes - an indelicate question

Recommended Posts

There's no way to pose this delicately so I'll just come out and say it - Does anyone know what fox poo smells like?

The Roxy dog has just come in from the garden completely black, absolutely delighted with herself and stinking to high heaven. I can only describe it as dog poo concentrated to the power of 100 with a vile underlying chemical smell. :vom: (sorry  )

DD and I were gagging as we bathed her and have both had to change our clothes and wash the dog's bed (where she was confined while I ran the bath). I have never smelt anything like this - it was absolutely vile. I've cleaned the bathroom and the kitchen floor but I'm sure I can still get a whiff when I go in there.

I've checked the garden and it appears that she was rolling around in the flower bed where the chickens dust bathe (they are safely in their run). I can't see anything untoward - there are lots of paw prints but they could be Roxy's. What do you think - could we have had a visit? (It isn't chicken poo even the korma ones don't pong this bad!)

Meanwhile Roxy is thrilled to bits. She's currently doing her white tornado act and desperately trying to get back out in the garden.

 I know what it smells like very well, but it's hard to describe!

sort of musky, strong smell - at least, that's the fox 'spray'. I guess the poo smells worse.

Trust me, if you accidentally pick up a bit of wood in the garden with bare hands, that the fox has marked, you won't forget it in a hurry! it took me ages to get rid of the smell. The only worse smell, as far as I'm concerned, is Ukadex anti-peck spray!

Thanks everyone. Not good news though  - had hoped we would be 'immune'. We're surrounded by other houses, road on one side and high fences. it would have to come right out in the open to get into our garden. No more unsupervised free-ranging for our girls then.

Explains why Sylvie was so skittish yesterday though - she was making a fuss everytime the run door was opened and for once not to get out.

Here's a handy tip to get rid of the smell of fox poo when your dog has rolled in it. Use tomato juice, or a passata type sauce or if all else fails a tin of chopped tomatoes over the dog then wash off with shampoo. It is brilliant and neutralises the smell instantly - I got the tip from a friend in America who uses the same method to get rid of skunk spray! Our dog looked at me as if I was completely mad the first time I did it to him!

Eurrrrgh! I share your pain! Monty did that on the way back from walk the other week! Had to walk him 1.5 miles with him trying to rub up me as well! It is absolutley gross and the worst thing he has rolled in yet out of cow, chicken, cat and sheep poo! (and a dead fish too on holiday!)

Don't you just love 'em!

Think I'm going to have to stock up on passata. As far as Roxy is concerned this is the best thing to happen since we got the chickens.

I was just going to suggest that - tomato ketchup works as well I think.

My first lab loved rolling in fox poo - I remember many years ago bringing her back from a walk - all the car windows wide open, me holding my breath, and Tiny sitting on the back seat with a big satisfied grin on her face!! (She was lovely really!)

Luckily my lovely lab, Dan, isn't interested in rolling in horrible things - he just eats it (but not fox luckily!). He is gorgeous too!
