Boo&Fudge
Hello My girls were out free ranging this afternoon when a sparrow hawk flew threw the garden but didn't go near the chickens, does anyone know if a sparrow hawk would take a chicken? I hope not Earlier on in the afternoon, my quietest chicken Fifi made me laugh, we have a stable door on the kitchen which I have the bottom part closed whilst I'm in the kitchen so I can keep an eye/ear on the girls. I was just walking past the door and guess who was perched on it? obviously looking for treats!!
chooklady
Sparrow hawks take birds in flight, mostly birds that are ill or injured anyway. (Small birds)They come into gardens because we feed the birds and there is a greater chance of them catching one in that environment especially if they have young to feed. They are not a threat to chickens!
stoice
Our girls were freeranging in the omlet netting while i nipped into the shower for a bit, when i came back down to check on them there was a pile of young blackbird coloured feathers on the lawn. I'm guessing a sparrow hawk as I've seen them pluck their lunch on our lawn before - wings covering their catch etc. Completely ignored my girls though. I'd say a chicken would be too big for a sparrow hawk and as Chooklady says they usually take flying birds.
