BERTIE MCSQUIRTY Posted August 22, 2008 Share Posted August 22, 2008 (edited) a rir hen has arrived at my gate this morning - i have separated her from the other girls because of the "evils" that poor rir hen is getting and given her something to eat, mixture of chick crumb for the extra vits and mash. she has her beak clipped and appears quite young (POL) - i have asked around and no one knows where she has come from although a chap up the road said that she was walking along the canal a couple of days ago. If you do want to re-home her - let me know, I'm in Leicestershire and may be able to work my magic on the OH. BERTIE MCSQUIRTY Posted August 22, 2008 Author Share Posted August 22, 2008 well - she's still here - i've asked around everyone i know who has chickens - the 2 possibles were the farmers - but they dont clip beaks. the farmer is coming round later just to check her over - although she's in really good condititon it appears to me. she seems to be much better at being picked up than mine do. i can accommodate her - she's separated from the others at the moment despite a few hairy bullying moments through the omlet netting, but settled in well. i thought she may be an ex batt hen - but she seems so young and her comb isnt fully grown - i may be wrong - i'll get farmer to confirm this. it just seems odd that her beak is clipped. i'm off for a walk along the canal later to see if there are any more - you never know someone might have dumped them on the way to a battery farm. i'm assuming i can put her in the coop later on at dusk? can someone just clarify - this else she will be in the shed tonight. Apparently quite often they escape from the lorries transporting them about. Maybe she has done a runner. Maybe she has done a runner. she is in quarantine (in the garden) would she be best then put in either the shed or the rabbit hutch (which is laying empty) rather than the coop? i hope she has escaped from a lorry - she's one lucky chook if she has. i've had a good look for mites (she appears really healthy) and found none - in fact she is in tip top condition, legs / eyes etc. she wont eat the mash / pellets / chick crumb that i have given her but is drinking - i have given her some raisins and corn - she ate the corn only. hopefully i can keep her if i get no response - she really is a beautiful bird, i have grown quite fond of her already. BERTIE MCSQUIRTY Posted August 22, 2008 Author Share Posted August 22, 2008 thanks for all your help - i was wandering round the villlage this evening putting up posters, then in a gateway(of a really posh house) i saw another chicken. they had not moved in long ago, so i knocked on the door - the lady told me she had been everywhere looking for her chicken who keeps escaping. i duly fetched said chicken and went to see her set up. she has 2 chickens in a converted wooden and painted wendy house - it was beautiful - the chicken is only 6 months old and they bought it from a breeder (in rutland) with the clipped beak i have suggested merrydale poultry for increasing her flock (as she is looking to do this) where she will get a fully beaked bird. i'm going over at the begininning of next week to sort out the bottom of her gate where the chicken keeps escaping. bit sad really as she really was a lovely bird - oh well - perhaps next time Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Well done in finding her rightful home, although it would have been great for her to have escaped from a lorry bound for a bettery farm. debbie26pet Posted August 23, 2008 Share Posted August 23, 2008 i bought black rock couple months ago lovely she is, but her beak is clipped looks like she is whistling, when i asked the said as they are kept in sheds to help prevent pecking to each other etc, they clip them, also the shed were she was they were walking on mesh and something to do with pecking from there , hers has slightly grown back, from the same place i got 2 others and they wasnt as they hadnt got to them yet but her beak are slightly crooked but they are fine and can eat Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
