Chooks Aloud
Why is it that when I look at the freecycle site, the items have already gone when they have only just come through on my computer? Karen
Old Speckled Hen
You're lucky. I filled in all the online forms to join our local group weeks ago and I'm still waiting for approval. Are they doing a criminal records check on me???
Rona
I think it is something to do with how you have your settings and preferences on freecycle and your email box. If you ask freecycle to email you everytime something is added and you have your mail box set to download emails frequently then you should be notified quite quickly. But, if you opt for the digests from freecycle and you don't send/receive for an hour or so then I suppose its quite easy for someone else to get there before you. The only way to get in first would be to log on to the messages page on your freecycle website and keep refreshing the screen so you can catch them as soon as they are posted. Olly
hmm, call me cynical but I sometimes wonder if the administrators take first pick!

Tessa the Duchess
hmm, call me cynical but I sometimes wonder if the administrators take first pick! As a Freecycle Administrator/Moderator can I just say that we don't, at least not on my group. We only moderate new members to make sure they don't spam or post incorrectly, so we get the 'offers' posts at exactly the same time as everyone else. If I moderate a post which is offering something I would like I wait until the post hits the list and then I ask for it, most times I am unsuccessful Tessa

I've given up now For those having problems registering with Freecycle, and I am assuming you are trying to join the Freecycle network that is hosted by Yahoo, first sign up to Yahoo then go to 'groups' and find your local Freecycle group, click 'join this group' and you 'should' after a few hours be accepted. Fingers crossed an' all that:) If after all that you still can't join, go back to Groups, and e.mail the 'owner' or moderator of the group and they should sort you out. Cooks
when I tried to register with my group I waited a couple of weeks and heard nothing, so I was thinking, well whats wrong with me??? I went back to the site and tried the log in details I had given when registering and they worked!, I got on the site no problems, but I had no 'welcome email saying I was approved'
hillfamily
I popped on my local freecycle today only to find that 'wanted' requests outweighed the 'offered' items by about a ratio of 2:1 One person placed 4 wanted requests for a fridge freezer, a bread machine, an ice cream maker and anyother kithchen appliances people didn't want

Chooks Aloud
Yes, I am on digest. I know people want to get rid of their stuff, but it would be nice sometimes if people just didn't take the first reply. I think that some people are just glued to their computer to see what they can get. Or am I just being cynical? Karen
Cinnamon
I am on individual emails, & I have just missed out on a new pasta machine,to which I responded the very second the mail arrived in my in box. Also missed out on some model aircraft stuff Hubby was after last week. In fact I don't think I have EVER 'won' anything on Freecycle - just given lots away
Ange1
I've just put on offer a 27 inch colour TV, but almost know that I will struggle to 'get rid' as it's not a flat screen TV! Someone has just asked me. what do they want for a FREE tv?!
Cooks
I dont have much luck with 'winning' anything I have just given away some kelloggs free swim vouchers on there as we wont use them, and I hate to waste them. I said I will post if she pops a bit of change in a charity box the next time she's passing. We've lsited about £100 quids worth of insulation once and when we then tried to list a wanted add it was refused. I think the mods on 'some' of the freecycle boards want blood before your alowed to ask for anything. Mind you jnust lately some people have numerous wanted adds! Redwing
It always makes me laugh when you get a message saying somthing along the lines of: WANTED IKEA brand new brown (not beige) leather sofa as per page XX in the Ikea brochure but then I guess you COULD live in eternal hope! Saying that someone asked recently for a clarinet and I did give them mine after checking out their background story (I wanted to be sure it went to someone really keen to learn!) I dont think the lady could believe her luck! We are moving so have given a lot away on freecycle, normal response time is def less than four or five mins and its hard to decide who to give your stuff to! I dare say when we have moved our new local group wont let me post wanted ads even though we have given half our house contents away down in Bristol!
