Yolky
This morning I went out at about half ten/eleven to see if there were any eggies and one of my chooks was on the nest so I left them. We went out and I got back about 10mins ago and the chook is still on the nest. So I opened the egg port and had a look and carefully took 2 eggs from where they were nestling under her chest. They were both very warm I have to say. Anyway she then left the nest and is now walking around the run. Does this sound like a chook going broody or just one taking a long time to lay? Yolky
Just went back out there and she was in there again. Now I am not 100% sure if she has layed today, she had 2 eggs under her earlier but that may have been from the other girls who have already layed so she could just be taking along time over laying. I opened the eggport door and gave her a smooth which made her get up and she walked out of the eglu.
Orwellian
Not a chicken eggspert myself (as only recently started this) but I have a broody hen and yours sounds like she may be. My gal puffs herself up and makes little noises to try to make herself look threatening when I open the next box. Best of luck, there is a good blog on Chicken FAQs re broody hens. Yolky
I really think she is. She is now in the box again and is allowing the other chicken to lay next to her. What should I do?
helenc
I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination but one of mine did this a couple of weeks ago. I kept taking her out of the nest box until the others had laid, then I let her go in for a little while but I put an ice pack in so she was sitting on that to help to cool her down. Then I took her out of the nest box (once I was sure she wasn't going to lay) and shut the eglu door. I also put an upturned plant pot in the nesting box overnight so she couldn't go in it then It took about 3 or 4 days and then she just stopped trying to go into the nestbox and another week before she started laying again Hope that helps Helen
superjules
Our Sylvie is broody at the moment, she'll roll eggs anywhere to sit on them in peace where she thinks I can't reach her!! Shut her out of the henhouse so she can't get warm and comfy, if the others lay in the run, it's not the end of the world! Don't trust her until she stops making "that noise". Yolky
I don't have a crate or anything just the cat box. Yesterday there was only one egg in the nest and it was broken, today 2 eggs, one in the run and broken I am cooking and feeding the eggs back to them, waste not want not and all that. Yolky
You know I Love my eglu but I do wish it had 2 nest boxes.
josephine77
You know I Love my eglu but I do wish it had 2 nest boxes. You know I Love my eglu but I do wish it had 2 nest boxes. Know just how you feel Yolky - I'm going through the same thing at the moment with Winnie my Pepperpot. She's been broody for 3 days now and seems very determined. I've blocked off the nest box with a flowerpot and she puffs herself up and sits on the roosting bars instead. This morning she was covered in poo from where one of the others had obviously slept on top of her. I miss the eggs! I'd got used to getting my 2 a day.
