hillfamily
Brilliant programme :D About 20 years ago I was driving home over the South Downs and saw the Northern Lights on one of their very rare times of being seen in England. It was all over the local news the following morning. Even though it was a very short display it was wonderful. One day I would love to go to see them properly

Milly
I have always wanted to see the northern lights, so the programme was a must see. I have been thinking about a trip for some time, but there is no guarantee you will see them. Does anyone know if there is a way of maximising your chances? On the programme they said it had to be really cold and clear. And someone has already mentioned sunspot activity. Norway in the snow looked so beautiful it might not matter if you didn't see them (but I really really want to!) Milly
The Dogmother
If you like snow Milly, then it's worth going into the arctic circle just for that. I love the stuff an just couldn't get over it... the sledge rides over frozen lakes were the best.
Ange's Girls
Latst year for my 40th my OH surprised me with a trip to northern Sweeden to stay in the ice Hotel, dog sledge, reindeer driving and a snow mobile to see if we could see the northern lights, the trip was brillient but unfortunatley they did not come out and play as it was very cloudy, hopefully i will go back some time and get to see them. there was an eclipse of the moon so we saw that instead we went at the begining of march the best time to see them is supposed to be December / January. Cate in NZ
Does anyone know anything about the Southern Lights (aurora australis)? I've been doing a bit of googling but I'm not finding what I want to know, which is where can you see them from? Are they only visible from Antarctica, or can they be seen in NZ or Australia, or even, possible Argentina? I know the Northern Lights can occasionally be seen from quite a way away from the North Pole, but then again there is a far greater land mass in the northern hemisphere, maybe NZ is just too far away . I'd love to do an Antarctic Cruise one day, meet a few penguins, get very cold, watch the Southern Lights , maybe I'll start saving
..lay a little egg for me
My husband saw a glimpse of the southern lights in Tasmania. He said it was not very impressive. I would guess, from this and from comments about being able to see the northern lights in the UK, that you might get a glimpse from Stewart Island/Dunedin if you are lucky, but probably best to go further south!! Start saving for that cruise!!
Redwing
We walked on the frozen sea in Finland which was fab and my husband was completely unaware until he looked down, saw the ice and the water underneeth and freaked out completely. We had to go back to dry land quick smart
..lay a little egg for me
We walked on the frozen sea in Finland which was fab and my husband was completely unaware until he looked down, saw the ice and the water underneeth and freaked out completely. We had to go back to dry land quick smart My hubby and his brother walked across the frozen Baltic sea to our summer home on one of the islands in the Stockholm archipelago (about a 4-mile walk) one winter. His mum was terrified (she stayed in Stockholm), they were unfazed...until they got to the house, which is on the opposite side of the island to where they made landfall, and found open sea just a few metres from the shore. They had thought the ice was really thick... They stayed overnight in the house and managed to raise the temperature from -20 to +10 in the house by keeping the fire going all night, however, when they made themselves a cup of tea shortly after getting to the house, the tea froze in the cups before they could finish it!!! Milly
The Telegraph Travelshop has a 2 for 1 offer on the Norwegian coastal voyage at the moment (for travel between October and December). It's still a lot of money, but a good offer! I don't know how long the offer is valid for but I have been wanting to do one of these tours for a long time and never seen such a big discount before. I can't get the link to work - but it's http://www.travelshop.telegraph.co.uk Milly
Janty
We went to Finnish lapland a couple of years ago at Christmas. Didn't see the lights though. We always say that it was the best family holiday we have ever had. We stayed in Pyha. It was so nice.
