Hen Watch
Initial set up cost was high (but worth it for amazing ease of cleaning etc). In 17 months I have spent £835 (of which £566 was eglu, run, hens, run converter and 25m omlet fencing). So you could say that without the set up cost, on average my hens so far have cost £16 a month. But in reality it comes in fits and starts. Back in July (according to my spreadsheet - oh I am sad arn't I ) I ran out of pellets, bedding, ACV and garlic powder and had to spend £26.65 in one day. I have also learned from my mistakes. I was buying mixed grit in a pet shop at £2-3 per tiny 500g bag. Now I have a stonking 25kg bag of grit for £6 which will last me FOREVER.... To offset the above ..... I never buy eggs, excess eggs are sold £1.50 for 6. I bake much more and make more egg recipes (like quiche) than I did before. My girls eggs taste so nice I could never go back to supermarket eggs (even if they were free range organic).
..lay a little egg for me
Hubbie just said you may want to plant a tree as our chucks like the tree. he's also added that getting your chicken to live 70 years to take advantage of the tree is a different matter! We have ours in our "orchard" and they love it under the trees (they do create huge craters under the trees though to make their dustbaths (or more recently, paddling pools)! Valkyrie
I'd like to add that while the costs may mount, the entertainment value is well worth it! Plus lots of poo to put on the compost for the veggie plot rather than buy fertiliser - another plus. Weeds sorted and pests devoured - yet another bonus.
