Helen&Lee
This might seem a strange question, but I pickled some eggs in Distilled Vinegar and it can't be right! I tried them - well one bite that swiftly ended up in the bin, then last weekend I got my Mum to try them - she did exactly the same but then insisted on a 'medicinal' brandy to get rid of the 'awful taste' So, what's the difference between distilled and white vinegar? And what do I pickle my eggs in?
Joojoo
I use normal malt vinegar but boil it up with mixed pickling spice from a local wholefoods store. Then when it's cooled, pour it over the onions etc. Lovely Not sure about eggs though.
Snowy
I think you need to add pickling spice to the distilled vinegar! You could still add some I'm sure - just chuck some into the existing jar of eggs and vineger and leave a bit longer. You can buy ready mixed pickling spice, I think schwarz do it. Cinnamon
I used a white vinegar when I did mine, but I can't remember what it was called. I do know it already had the spices in it though.
Helen&Lee
Aahh... Pickling Spices! Thank Goodness for you guys - I am going to start afresh though - they are truly disgusting, and I can't imagine being able to rescue them! Chook n Boo Mum
Went into Tesco (sorry!) yesterday, and they had the Sarsons Pickling Vinegar 1.14l (what an odd size!! ) on offer, 2 bottles for £2. I got 4!! Hope that helps, Have never tried pickled eggs, does the taste of the egg change dramatically? I have no idea whether the vinegar soaks into the egg. Sorry am obviously not very adventurous with my tastes! Sha x

Sha x Do you know, I love pickled eggs (especially good with a pint ) but I couldn't tell you what they taste like I'm sure they still taste 'eggy', only pickled, if that makes sense. A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I use half and half white wine and cider vinegars. Anna x
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Wild mum, I'd say try a hard boiled egg and a bland pickled onion at the same time. Snowy - have you tried rolling one round in a packet of ready salted crisps? It's a fun messy pub pastime! The salt goes well with the vinegar and the crunch goes well with the softness of the egg. It's wrong, but wrong things are good things sometimes! Anna x
