I have to share this with you.

Went outside to check the chickens earlier. Picked up a large stone near the eglu to see if there were any worms around for them and a slowworm whizzed out and started to slither across the garden. The girls took a millisecond to clock what was going on, hot-footed it over like speedy gonzales and snatched it up!!!

They then proceeded to play tag with it, running around with it in their beaks then dropping it as another one pounced on it - while I was trying to muffle my horrified gasps and shrieks and jump out the way as they ran towards me!

They pulled it in two and promptly swallowed it up - it must have been about 10 inches long in total and 2 of them managed it between them - eeeeeewww

 

I then needed to put the chickens back into their run but couldn't bear to pick them up incase I felt it wriggle in their crop so they got booted back in instead!

 

A protected species as well!! Naughty critters!

Yikes what with this and the poo eating dogs its been quite a inducing day

Maybe they didn't reliase that it had protected species status.

Bad. I have slowworms in my area so I hope mine don't copy yours! Mine aren't even interested in slugs yet though. We shan't tell the protected powers that be!

My top chook Daisy ate two and a bit mice over the weekend

 

Loki-cat caught them and brought them into the garden and Daisy helped herself when he had finished. I'm not sure the last one was totally dead, as she actually took it off Loki rather than wait, but she ate it all herself and wouldn't share with any of the others

 

The upside is that the resulting egg has gone in the box of someone I don't like very much - well there were no ears or tail sticking out!

 

At least mice are not protected species (though they may soon be rare round here )
