I got 3 new hens from Meadowcroft Poultry last weekend. They have been eating and drinking ok but today the youngest one did not come out of the Eglu when I opened it up this morning. When I looked at her there was no sign of her eyes!!! There is some dried blood on one side and the other side is slightly swollen. Are both eyes closed up or have they been pecked out? There does appear to some discharge from the eye and nostril.

 

I've tried bathing them in cold tea but don't even know if she has any eyes left. Sorry if this sounds really stupid but i've never seen anything like this before. I don't think she has eaten all day. I've tried to give her porridge, grapes, water but it's really difficult. She has just been standing with her head tucked in virtually all day.

 

Is it mycoplasma? (I've been on the net all day trying to find out what can be wrong). Is it a bad cold? Meadowcroft said the birds were guaranteed for a month....do I take her back? If I do are they likely just to put her down? Do I try and find a poultry vet? Do I just wait and hope she pulls through? I've ordered some citricidal so it should arrive in a couple of days.

I would get her to a vet as soon as you can.

 

It might be worth contacting the breeder.....if they are guaranteed for a month, but that will only be against illness, not against being attacked by another hen I would imagine.

 

I'd bring her in and keep her warm. Try to get fluids down her. I'd also keep bathing the eyes with warm saline or weak tea.

 

I would also observe the others carefully in case they come down with whatever is ailing her.

Oh my word, that sounds awful . I agree with Egluntine, get her to a vet. I would contact the breeders too, they may know what it is. Hopefully her eyes are just swollen shut .

Hi,

 

Just back from the vets with one dead chicken. She was having real trouble breathing, her eyes were closed up, and the cost of treatment (with no guarantee of success) was prohibitive. I will be contacting the breeder tomorrow to let her know, and arrange to get a replacement.

 

Chicken keeping is not easy at times is it....

Sory to hear that, I don't like the sound of it at all - did the vet say what it might be?

 

I'd be inclined to slip some Citricidal in your girls water and garlic powder in their feed to boost their immune systems and cross your fingers. The breeder really needs to know so that they can check the rest of their stock.

I always add garlic powder to my girls' feed and some citricidal was dispatched today (after ordering it through the internet yesterday) so will hopefully arrive tomorrow or Wednesday. The other 2 girls seem OK at the moment so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

erm, just reading this with a bit of shock.

 

we have a chicken with a swolen eye, the eye was closed up and all puffy.

 

not both eyes, just one, but, its still rather scary, you are not far from us are you could this be a coincidence? they are our original girls, not new ones, it just seemed very odd.

 

I took her to the vet and go anti-inflamitary and anti-biotics in an injection and a course of antibiotics for a week. the vet didnt seem too worried, but said we should watch her and keep her on her own for a little while.
