CrazyDaizy
Hia Folks Our new chook Snowflake has laid her first egg That was yesterday, and she has laid again today. Her eggs are smaller than shop bought eggs. We were used to eggs being laid that were slightly larger than shop bought eggs. But even shop bought eggs vary dont they? Anyway, will Snowflakes lil eggs get bigger as she matures?
stoice
will Snowflakes lil eggs get bigger as she matures? Yes they will. Really had me worried with that subject title!
Egluntyne
They will get bigger, but because of the time of year, maybe not till spring.
CrazyDaizy
Ok. It concerns me because when we had our last chickens from Omlet (one died quite recently) they were obviously a few months older than we were lead to believe as they were laying when they arrived (there was an egg they had laid un route to us) and the eggs were "normal" size..... .... And because one of our chooks died recently.... I am wondering just how old they both were??? Cilla is the other older chook and she seems to have stopped laying completely now!!! She should be just over 2 years old..... surely she shouldnt have stopped laying yet? How old are chooks supposed to live to anyway?
helenmb
I only have one of my original two now who I think is about 3 years old, she stopped laying at the begining of the year so I suppose about the same time as your girl. I found this info in an old magazine and posted it earlier today which might be of interest... http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=33224 I hope it helps. Edited - ooh, sorry forgot to mention my new Amber Star has just started to come into lay and she too is laying much smaller eggs than I was expecting, as also like you when we had our original two hens they layed standard sized Large eggs from day one (so think they were older than we thought they were). I understand this is quite normal.
Maccbean
I don't know if it's a fluke, but my snow white is very small, and has been laying 52-55ishg eggs each day. Today it was a huge 75g, poor girl, it must have stung a bit I too am hoping that this is the sign of the size to come!
quickcluck
Mine rarely reach the 50g mark But are lovely all the same
