BeckyBoo
Only our two boys are now 18 weeks and no sign of a cock-a-doodle-doo yet. Sadly they'll have to go although we're thinking of being brave and having Fred for the pot, I could do it but my OH and the children are all a bit soft and I get shouted down in protest before I can finish saying "think of Sunday lunch!" Anyway, I read that buff sussex's, which is what Fred is, are best left until 24-26 weeks before a fortnights finishing off and there's no way he won't be crowing the place down by then. bigmommasally
Oh you're brave, I don't think I could eat something I'd named. I'd feel differently if he was one of many that I was rearing to eat. Is Buff Sussex a good table breed? I'm with you on wanting to move to a farm though! Barkisland
Nope Definitely couldn't eat a bird I had 'known'. I admire your sense of detachment, I am just a big soft townie. I would be a veggie if I had to slaughter my own.

The Dogmother
They are all different but generally anything from 18 weeks onwards. Don't forget that the shorter daylight hours at the moment will mean that they mature slower.
craftyhunnypie
Bumble my huge Cobar started at just 8 weeks old ..with a good loud ur urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It's now the full crow! He's 26 weeks now. He has gone naughty with me - running at my leg, but he's still mummy's big soldier. Spongebob, my frizzle didn't crow until about 18 weeks. beach chick
Apricot, or Apricockerel, or Roger Moore, silkie bantam cock, is now really quite vocal, aged about 23 weeks. he is also very amorous... so far, we can ignore him. the only 3 neighbours to comment so far dont seem to mind too much - he reminds them of their childhoods, or they dont think he is as loud as the seagulls. we are planning no action until there is a complaint, at which point we might rehome him, poss to our oldest's school, which has a farm on site. but would much prefer to keep him!! Topdollar
Margot now renamed Gerry is about 20 weeks old now and is doing all the things boys do except Crowing. I'm hoping he's a mute so we can keep him and keep the neighbours happy.
beach chick
well, Apricockerel was crowing VERY loudly at 4.30 this am, despite the fact that he was shut in the eglu, with the door shut, with 4 of the ladies (who are now probably deafened!) getting slightly worried about whether we should keep him or not. he's lovely, no trouble, but LOUD and I dont want to upset the neighbours. it's such a dilemma, and sad because we love him. the guy we got him and the 2 silkie girls from went to a lot of trouble to try and make sure they were girls, and he did offer to rehome any boys. however, he keeps the ones he has back in cages indoors, until he manages to find them another home, but I'm not sure if that's the kindest thing to do... we are away on holiday from Friday for a week, so I guess we'll have to wait til we get back and then see if the neighbours are revolting (so to speak).
