tomdeane
Hi there, I am thinking of building a much bigger run than the one I have now and getting a couple more hens. But I was just looking at wire for it and there are so many different sizes. preferably I would want one with largest holes possible, as it looks nicer than the one i have now with tiny gaps between the wire as it looks so ugly! I was wondering if someone can tell me what size the gaps are on an omlet run wire, as that is obviously the best to aim for size wise, as they look quite spaced apart. So if someone could maybe measure it for me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom
Jules.
The gaps are 1x2 inch. If you are going to get weldmesh go for the stongest gauge that you can, mine is 16g, with hole sizes 1x1 inch. Here's some photos of my run I cut one bar of the weldmesh to make a hole big enough to hang the grub! I got the mesh from Hills of Devon, it was the cheapest place that I could find with free next day delivery. I rcouped some of my outlay by selling my surplus mesh to a forum member. tomdeane
that looks really good. I will have a look for some that gauge then and size, as mine at the minute I had to cut like 3 bits of wire to hang the grub. Thanks for the help, Tom
tomdeane
do you think 2 inch x 2 inch holes would be too big? Tom
Jules.
I don't know the answer to that one properly, but I think that maybe it could be too big, just because if there was a bird flu outbreak & we had to keep our girls under cover that a sparrow or similar might be able to squeeze through to get into the run
stoice
I've also been told that a fox can *sorry about this* chew the heads of chooks that poke their heads out. They kinda hypnotise them then.... Well, that and the fact that rats could easily get in wider mesh too I think that 1.5" square or 1x2" would be ok. tomdeane
sounds awful. i think i will look for 2 x 1 or 1.5 x 1.5 then. Thanks for the advise. Tom
Merry
I've been trying to make the same decision. I've eventually settled for the 1x1inch mesh, a decision made by looking at all the fantastic chicken runs on page 1 and the advice of very helpful and experienced chicken keepers who responded to my question. I was recommended Hills of Devon. £54 for 30 metres length 36" width, 16 gauge. Free next day delivery too!! It should arrive tomorrow, then the construction can begin!
