Selling preserves

Recommended Posts

Having been firmly bitten by the bug and now having a cupboard full of jams and preserves for xmas hampers ("Ooops, word censored!"ody to give these too though!). I was wondering about selling some.

I thought maybe I could start putting little notes about them on my egg boxes, I've quite a customer base now for eggs (note to self - could sell more eggs if I had more chooks!) and I figured it's a good place to start.

What would be a reasonable price to charge? I have jams, jellies, chutneys, I can also make lemon and orange curd and I'm not bad at cakes so I could offer an order a cake service too - some of those could be made in advance and frozen.

All input appreciated.

oooo good idea about the staff room I'll try that.

I'll also try the notes - £2 is probably a bit much for many of mine as I've tried to use smaller than 1lb jars for most of them.

Hi - I sell my jams for 80p & my picalilli for £1. The money from these is what I bought the BHWT battery pack with & the Xmas cards. I will carry on buying BHWT things for family from money made or donate it straight to BHWT.

I go off the prices of jam in Aldi.

My eggs are £1 for 6 in a lovely pink box. I have to account for the boxes with the eggs, as I don't always get them back.

I try to think of new recipes each week / fortnight. I have regular customers now & sometimes they have to wait for the girls to lay.

I've been told my plum jam is delicious!

I love making jam, labelling it & making it look pretty.

Pickled bantam eggs are next!

Sha, I use the smaller jars too....I find the larger jars are too much jam, as I get sick of the same flavour for too long.

Emma, I am desperate to find bantam eggs for pickling for my Dad's hamper. He loves them. As all of my chickens are moulting, I can't really do it this year. Even tried a local petting zoo with 40+ bantams and their's aren't laying either :roll:

Christian, have you sold any of your lovely little Christmas cakes? If so how much for?

Have just left a message on the easypeesy christmas cake thread (which is the recipe I have used this year) to let Missuscluck know that I've sold one, I'd just like a ball park idea of how much to charge the lovely lady who's requested it! Having nearly choked at one I saw at a Christmas fair this afternoon, which was over £12 for a similar sized cake decorated with fruit & nuts, I would like to give a realistic price!

Sorry Penguinmad, I've hijacked your thread a bit, but I'd like to sell some cakes as well as jars at a craft fair next weekend - family & friends will be most impressed to know they are getting the leftovers from a craft fair for Christmas won't they?!
