sandyhas3chucks
my ex bats sore bum, really responds to the nappy rash cream, but leaves a residue. She came with it, got bullied, used stocholm tar, bad idea, mad it very sore.needing 2 baths at good intervals to remove. Now away from bullies, it still really isn't any better except with the nappy cream on, but I am reluctant to keep on using an unknown effect on her. the sodocrem also worked welluntill her new friend thought it looked like the cream her previous owner fed her & pecked her(gently tho) for it. purple spray with aloe vera runs off the naked patch, so doesn't help. took her to the vet got some fuciderm, friday to apply twice daily & this makes it flare upp too. her preen gland is sore too as she obviously rubs ther. the vet wants me to stick with the fuciderm a few more days, but poor lass isn't getting any calming relief at all now, except when it goes pal all on it's own cannot see any identifyable reaaon for this effect. sprayed her for lice having seen other posts! vet thought not likely as so localised. it is reducing in area where feathers have regrown. I am feeling rather cruel now as it looks so sore! so please help ANY IDEAS
Mel (& Paul)
What about diluted tea tree oil gently applied with cotton wool? It has (I think) an antiseptic and soothing effect.
sandyhas3chucks
Thanks but t trea is known to be an irritant to some people, so I wouldn't risk it on an animal, specially as it is so red raw looking. though if there was a cream I could buy that might help. Aqueas calamine is quite soothing, but made it go redder too. I did nothing at all today & it seems no worse. I am going to research the ingredients in the metatanium that does help, I stopped worried as it's not meant for chooks & worried about side effects. Egluntyne
What are you using as bedding material? Could she be allergic to it do you think? Someone reported a while back that their hen was allergic th either Hemcore or Aubiose....can't remember which. I often use diluted tea tree on wounds, very successfully. Applied neat it would be a bit powerful.
sandyhas3chucks
I wondered about the bedding aftert your advice to someone else, hence the changes, I think that the flax seems ok... when she broke her leg she was on towels & inconti bads Could you tell me how dilute & with what medium? (guessing with you a quick splash in a dollpop of something) Not inly did I spray for mites I got her to dance on white paper & still found nothing so reasonably confident it is not that, My gut feeling is , that as she came with it, then got picked on then had Stokholm tar on it, that it is now over sensitive & irritatred by lots of things. But only guessing,. I did nothing to it yesterday& it is much the same, the worst bit seeming to be on top of her vent. What do you reckon then
..lay a little egg for me
Aloe vera gel is very good for healing. I had it for my horse. Calendula is also supposed to be excellent for promoting healing.
The Dogmother
In the summer, a couple of my holiday hens arrived with sore bums. I have a water spray with a couple of drops each of tea tree oil and lavender oil added to it; I use this for any animal with 'sore bits'. I sprayed their bums with it and within a couple of days they were looking much better.
Lizzie
What about Vaseline ? My mum's cat gets a sore bottie sometimes and Vaseline works wonders. Hope it calms down soon x
