jomaxsmith
Hi there. I remember last Christmas some links were posted on here for charity gifts where you could 'give' a cockerel or a cow to someone in an undeveloped country - i.e. you give a donation to charity instead of buying a gift and you receive a fridge magnet or certificate or similar to give to the gift's recipient. I usually use Oxfam for this to buy gifts for the children's teachers etc but wondered what else was out there if anyone could provide me with some web links. Many thanks Jo
Paola
Sorry I could only think of Oxfam. Am sure somebody will be along soon who knows
Sheilaz
Oxfam do have a great range this year, including bags of seeds, an allotment, tools and a vet, to name a few, as well as the goats etc.
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
My step-sister has been giving me these for the past few years. Thus far I've had chickens and bees: https://www.farmfriends.org.uk/buy-an-animal The people in the third world get the animal, and you get some little playing-card style cards with pictures and quotes from a family who have received an animal. So the kids on the cards say things like having a chicken which lays sellable eggs has paid for them to go to school, the mums say they sell the eggs for household goods etc. And you get a rubbery plastic cutesy animal - which is nice for just keeping in your pocket as a reminder, or a cute tangible toy if you're a kid. I really like the Farm Friends approach. Be wary of getting goats though - goats lead to major deforestation and corruption of growing land. The erosion they cause means people end up not being able to grow crops. Bees and chickens are much better. Last year I got injections against diseases from her, but I don't know where she got them from. I also sponsor a child. Depending on how flush you are, this is a great present: http://www.soschildrensvillages.org.uk/children-charity.htm I got a little letter and drawing and picture of my child in Senegal in the post today. She's growing up and looks much happier than last year! She's doing karate and embroidery in the extra-curricular clubs they've started running to aid confidence and increase skills. Here's a link on charities and what they spend on their running costs vs aid money going directly to the people who need it, if that helps you make a decision as well. I've never been too keen on Oxfam's 1/3 of a pound going into marketing, fundraising (essentially marketing) and overheads: http://money.uk.msn.com/guides/ethical-money/article.aspx?cp-documentid=4750508 And here's a link which explains a bit about the goat thing, and which has links to charity gift websites: http://money.uk.msn.com/guides/ethical-money/article.aspx?cp-documentid=4750411 Anna x

Guest
Build Africa has a campaign at the moment called Hatch a Plan. £30 buys 20 chicks and the materials to build a coop plus vaccinations and training etc.
bronze
I normally give the less fluffy options as apparently they get lenty of people going for the cute chick and donkeys and not enough going for the loos and the like
ubereglu
Farm Friends...I love the packages they send you, as they give you a little plastic figure of the animal and some cards explaining who and why they benefit others. Here's the website
