Christmas angel hens

Recommended Posts

These are a mini felt version of my doorstop and paperweight pyramid hens, but with halos and wings. They're stuffed with pillow stuffing so they're a lot lighter than the rice-filled ones.

They can be hung on the tree, or festive twigs and the like. I think I'm going to put them on a heart-shaped twig wreath when I've done a few more in different colours.

HOW TO MAKE ANGEL HENS

COMPONENTS:

Cardboard for templates (if you need them)

Some felt in the colours of your choice for bodies

Some cream or white felt for wings

Some red and yellow felt for wattles, combs and beaks (substitute orange for yellow or red-bodied hens)

Pillow/toy stuffing

Glittery pipe cleaners

Some small googley/jiggly eyes

Needle, thread, fat thread or wool for hanging them up with, glue.

PREPPING THE COMPONENTS:

I made a pyramid-shaped chicken by cutting an equilateral triangle cardboard template which I then used as the basis to cut out four fabric triangles.

Make a wing template, or if you're feeling brave, fold a piece of cream felt in half and cut three fat feathers going upwards, so it looks like a Christmas tree with three mega-fat branches when you fold it out again. When it's folded in half, cut inwards from the bottom feathers towards the spine to make the spine shorter so it will fit on the chicken's back beneath the comb. Do this from the top feathers as well if necessary.

Make cardboard templates for the comb and the wattle, allowing an extra fat bit along the edge of the comb so it could be sewn into the seam of the body. Draw round these on your red felt and cut your felt out.

For the beak, I cut a square of felt in half along the diagonal to make triangles, then folded those triangles in half to make the 'top beak' and 'bottom beak'.

MAKING THE ANGEL HEN:

Sew the triangles together to make a pyramid. I sewed running stitch along the 'right side out' edges so they look more homemade and rustic. When you reach a corner, sew all three joining bits of triangle together to themselves for strength.

Insert the comb where you want it near the top of one of the seams near the point of your pyramid. Under the comb, add pinches of stuffing - not too much - and then continue with your seam down to the base.

Sew your wings on to this seam. I keep them folded in half and then overstitch them on along the spine of the wings to the spine of the body.

Use a flat side as a face. I just sewed the wattle and beak straight on to the fabric and glued on eyes with a tiny dab of fabric glue.

To make the halo, twist a bit of pipe cleaner into a circle, and wrap an end through it a couple of times to make a stem. Cut off the excess leaving a halo on a stem. Shove this in through the pointy join above the comb.

Use a curved wool/embroidery sewing needle to thread a piece of wool through this same point in front of the halo stem, but behind the 'face' side of the body - so it only comes out of the sides, not the face, and then thread the ends through the halo and knot.

And there's your festive angel hen!

Most of the components you can get in Wilkinsons or craft shops and the wreath mine are hanging on is by Gisela Graham. I found it in a kitchenware shop.
