Mud, glorious mud

Recommended Posts

Hi,

my ex-batts have been with us for coming up to 3 weeks now and are currently free ranging in the garden whilst I have decamped my home office to the dining room so I can keep an eye!

Their run is currently on the grass and is now devoid of grass, which must be horrible for them.... mustn't it?

What's the best option....

continue with mud... are they ok with it? especially because they are not able to go out every day and free range so some days they are in their run which has toys and food etc so it's not like they'd be bored.

woodchip - we were thinking of a light covering of wood chip that will give them some substance

concrete? we have a hardstanding area at the end of the garden which would mean they were on concrete but with weeds and moss and all their usual bits to peck at

I could put pavinbg slabs where they currently are in the garden

any other ideas????

our lawn was hardly a bowling green but with at least 6 months of winter ahead I want to try and save some for their free ranging. any advice greatly appreciated!

I recently sought advice on the forum as my four were literally swimming in mud. I was loath to move them as they had a nice area to free range. Having consulted fellow forum users, I moved mine on to a concrete area and put down quite a lot of bark in their run. Although they no longer roam free, they are in an extended cube run and are so much happier and cleaner. I hope to move them back onto softer ground in April/May time. I am still getting the same amount of eggs so they aren't that bothered by the restriction.
