kitbag
i am in the middle of my GCSE mocks at the moment. Most days, i am in exams for about 4 hours. The chairs in the exam hall are the most uncomfortable things in the world. Me and all my friends came back to my house between exams this morning, my Mum asked us how our first exam was and we all started talking about our backs at the same time! Ireally think that they ought to improve the posture of the chairs, because we are all going to end up as hunchbacks! Does anyone else have this problem!? We are 15 and 16 year old girls, not OAPs! Thanks for listening to my rant! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Ain't Nobody Here
That's not good . Employers often make a fuss about "health and safety" of office chairs, you'd think school kids deserve the same consideration . Can you take a cushion in with you? Good luck with the exams, by the way .
Geoid
Im lucky, now I get to use a computer for my exams, I get to sit in a nice cushioned comfy chair... I know what you mean about the exam hall chairs... Owww.
Phonix
yeah they are awful...especially when your bending over a desk writing. They don't get any better at uni! x
Guest
Oddly H&S rules DON'T apply to school children. We have no obligation to provide height adjustable chairs or monitors in the ICT suites - good job too - the height adjustable chairs have wheels and are a NIGHTMARE to have in a classroom - I HATE the rooms that I've taught in that had wheeled chairs. Schoolchildren are a nightmare anyway - swinging on chairs is still all too common, a few years ago I had a boy KNOCKED OUT because he fell off his chair backwards and hit his head on the desk behind. His Mum near killed him after too - she was a teacher and knew only too well what an issue swinging on chairs is. Oh and in my ICT suite I am forever getting girls who say "its more comfortable like this" sitting with the keyboard on their laps and their knees bent up against the table. Its no so much the chairs in the exam hall that are the problem as your posture - you slump over the papers.

I find it really hard to sit up straight especially when writing and I need to get it done fast!!
Guest
It is hard - but that's why everyone comes out with backache - a different chair wouldn't actually help because in your haste to get the exam done you would still end up slumped! Snowy
I agree Pengy - most muscular problems are caused by prolonged inactivity rather than overuse. Sitting for several hours in a tense position would give anyone backache, wouldn't matter what chair you used! The ideal is to remember to move a bit - sit up, stretch, wriggle about - get the blood flowing again, at least every 20 minutes or so. If you forget and come out of an exam with backache, have a good stretch, do some exercise and get moving again and it shouldn't cause any long term problems. And the fitter you are in the first place, the less likely you are to have problems.
ChrisP
I complained about my chair because my back always hurt after, and I do a lot of exercise and found it didnt make my back better. I was given a different chair, which although it didn't help lots, it did help a bit. Try some muscle stretching/yoga/whatever its called exercises before and after each exam? if you have two or three a day, try going for walks and doing back exercises between each one
Cinnamon
Humph, if you want to talk back pain & school children, then listen to this. 3 years ago my daughters school decided that each child must take in every single text book for every subject each day. So on a day when they have PE for example, they have around 16 school books, 3 large text books, PE kit & lunch, pencil case, personal bits to carry in a bag or rucksack. If they are caught with books missing from the enormous file they have to lug around, they are sent to the 'focus room' until a parent can bring the books in. On a day like today when Devon has 3 double subjects, she still has to take in 12 books. She has her mocks at the moment too,Kitbag. Not suprisingly my girls complain of sore back on a regular basis

I'd be so tempted to rebel and send her in with the bare minimum every day and something to read in the focus room. Or send her in with one of those suitcases on wheels. Cinnamon
The scool had those cases on wheels, but none of the pupils would use them - not cool enough apparantly. Not much good for mine anyhow, with the walk to the school bus stop along a country lane to contend with. I campaigned long & hard for 18 months about this ridiculous rule, but I am afraid I no longer had the energy or time to carry it on. And my gilrs want to learn,& were both mortified at the thought of being sent to the focus room - I just couldn't do it to them

Chocobo
Got my mocks and three actual gcse's just after christmas holidays. So all the teachers are setting lots of homework- yet no revision time- everyone in year 11 is so overloaded at the moment. English teacher is setting us a essay to do every week aroundabout until the real exams. Billions of books as well!!!
ubereglu
Cinnamon, I'd be cross if I had to take that many school book in everyday. That's simply ridiculous and can't be good for your daughters back's. I'm glad my school don't have that rule!
Cinnamon
Its an American idea apparantly Ubereglu. Sadly the school now see it as a positive thing as fewer puplis are forgetting the boks they need for the day, however I think to make them just bring in each days books makes them more responsible really. Devon got a B in her maths mock yesterday, which she is pleased with. Today she completed her Science paper in 15 mins - not sure if thats a good thing or not
