wombatally
I have slabbed my two runs and seemed to be going through hemcore at a ridiculous rate. I use that outside (it's covered for the winter but suffers a few occasional leaks) and megazorb in the nextbox and house as it's nice and fluffy. I went to get some more hemcore the other day and they had none left, so I took a bale of Bedmax as I was desperate. It is great!!! It's more like shavings but you get tonnes to a bale - a quarter bale gave my 1.2m x 2.2m run a really nice layer for them to dig in. I am really chuffed with it and at £4 a bale is half the cost of Hemcore. I know Hemcore is nice and smells lovely but I think now I am going to stick to Bedmax or at least mix the two. Anyway, hey ho, that's me. I cannot believe I am on the internet after 10pm raving about chicken bedding
Redwing
Yep. Chickens get you like that! I saw Bedmax at my local feed supplier - the only reason I didn't get it was that I thought it might take longer to compost, as a keen gardener I dont want ANYTHING that takes longer to compost! If you are not a manic gardener then I agree it looks good stuff. The other thing I like the sound of is woodshavings with eucalyptus oil which smell lovely (again the compost problem rules this out for me)
wombatally
Agree about the compost - it would take longer but I have started chucking it straight onto the veggie garden for the winter as a weed suppressant. Any left over I burn in my little galvanised incinerator and chuck the ashes onto the garden. The megazorb takes ages to compost down. jomaxsmith
I use Easibed, which is like very fine woodchip and I find it stays intact longer than Hemcore/Aubiose so is better for wet weather. Cheaper too! Jo
