Lydia
I cleaned out the cube yesterday. Normally I'd let the girls freerange while I do it but, as the builders are still here ( ) and the back gate was open they had to stay in. So I shut the cube door while I cleaned the back. I glanced out the window at about 4.30 pm to see 8 exceedingly fed up hens queued up on the ladder trying to go to bed! Yep, you've guessed it - Mrs Dozy here had forgotten to reopen the cube door! Chicken logic clearly decreed that they all took turns in tapping the door with their beak and looking at it intensely to see if it would open. So when the girl at the top of the ladder had finished the beak banging exercise she'd fly off the ladder, stage left, and join the queue again at the bottom for another go I went out and opened the door for them. Trust me, you've never been made to feel so humbled as when 8 hens collectively roll their eyes and tut at you! I swear if they'd had watches they'd have tapped them too. Redwing
I did that last weekend only my hens aren't as assertive as yours and they just huddled up against the outside of the door, I went out to 'close' the door only to find I couldn't move it as the hens were on the outside We can't be good at EVERYTHING you know! bluekarin
That is so funny! Poor girls. One of mine spent at lot of time in the run one day last week and I was getting so excited as I thought she was going to lay an egg. However, it wasn't until I went out with their bowl of spaghetti that I realised she'd got shut in there when the wind blew the run door shut I'd forgotten to put the chair in front of the door to stop this happening.
