Janepie33
Tilly, my orriginal Omlet Bluebelle is now moulting for the second time this year and she has been laying thin shelled eggs for over a year now. Is this a really unusual time for chickens to moult? Also, I have noticed that her bald skin looks a bit yellow (like those corn fed chickens you can get from the supermarket!) and I have in fact been feeding the chickens a mixture of pellets and corn recently. Does this sound normal or should I be worried?
chelsea
I agree it is a daft time to be moulting - but it is normal. I've had 2 moulters over the past month. My white chicken goes a yellowy "tinge" when not laying/moulting. Rinsed tuna, chick crumb or mealworms help with extra protein during a moult. TheCoop
Or try some porridge oats mixed with warm water with poultry spice mixed in. This gives them slow release energy and loads of nutrients and protein to get them through the moult. One of ours looks very scabby at the moment, but her new feathers are coming thorugh now, so in a few weeks (hopefully) she'll be back to normal. Suzy
I've come on here as I was about to ask a similar question. One of my girls, the bottom of the pecking order has lost a lot of feathers. Not that she had that many to start with but also, I haven't found many feathers at all so I don't know where they're going. She is bullied quite a lot so I am not sure whether they are attacking her and she's losing them or if it is a moult. She's had two softees but that's all stopped now. She doesn't mix with the others that much and is still really timid in comparison to the others who are really close to being able to be picked up. I just want her to be happy and do what is right for her. They all now have layers porridge in the morning (two bowls so all can eat) so she is eating and drinking but no way near as much as the others. Any advice? Sorry to leap onto your question janepie33, but I think it sounds quite similar.... Thanks Suzy
